RDR 2

If GTA RP is a crime drama, RedM is a western movie where every character is a real person. It is slower, more atmospheric and full of stories you can't get anywhere else. Here is how to start.

What is RedM?

RedM is a free multiplayer mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC that lets communities run their own servers. It is made by Cfx.re, the same team behind FiveM for GTA 5. In a big moment for the scene, Rockstar Games acquired Cfx.re on August 11, 2023, so RedM is now part of the Rockstar family.

Most RedM servers are roleplay servers: you create a character and live a life in the Wild West, the same era as Arthur Morgan's story. Every server has its own rules, towns, jobs and economy.

What you need

  • A legit PC copy of RDR2. RedM runs on the PC version of the game, bought from an official store. Pirated copies won't work, and console versions can't run RedM.
  • A microphone. Like GTA RP, roleplay happens over voice chat.
  • A free Cfx.re account, if you are asked to sign in.

How to install RedM

  1. Install RDR2 on your PC and launch it once to make sure it works.
  2. Download RedM from the official site, redm.net. Never download it from anywhere else: fake installers can contain malware.
  3. Run it, point it to your RDR2 folder if it asks, and let it download its files.
  4. Sign in with your Cfx.re account if asked, then browse the servers.

Pick your server

Head to our live RedM server list to see which servers are busy right now, with real player counts. Look for a server in your language, then join its Discord: that is where you'll find the rules, the application form if it's a whitelist server, and help for new players.

Public servers let you jump in right away. Whitelist servers ask you to apply first, but usually offer deeper, more serious roleplay. Try a public one first if you just want to feel it out.

Western RP tips for your first character

Write a short backstory

Where did your character come from, and why are they here? A farmhand looking for a new start, a drifter running from debts, a doctor fresh from the East Coast. Keep it short, simple and open, so other players can add to it.

Your horse is your best friend

In the Wild West, your horse is your car, your storage and your escape plan. Take care of it, don't ride it into the ground, and stable it properly. Losing your horse far from town is a story you will remember for a long time.

Law or outlaw?

Many players want to be outlaws on day one, but the best stories need both sides. Sheriffs, deputies and bounty hunters are often in demand. If you do pick the outlaw life, remember value of life: a lone bandit doesn't fight five deputies. Learn the core rules in our RP terms guide, they work in RedM too.

Camp life and honest work

Some of the best RedM moments are the quiet ones: songs around a campfire, hunting with friends, trading at the general store, ranch work. Don't rush to the action. Slow scenes build the friendships that make the big moments matter.

Surviving your first night

Your first hours in a RedM town can feel overwhelming, so keep it simple. Introduce yourself at the saloon or general store, ask locals where to find work, and listen more than you talk. Earn your first money with honest jobs and save it for a better horse and gear. Most of all, remember there's no rush. The people who become legends on a server usually started as nobodies who were fun to be around.

Watch before you ride

The best way to understand the vibe is to watch experienced roleplayers. Here are live RDR2 streams right now:
