GTA RP has its own language. Server rules are full of short words like RDM, NLR and OOC, and if you don't know them, you might break a rule without even realising it. Learn these and you will sound like a regular from day one.
The basics: RP, IC and OOC
- RP (roleplay): playing as a character, not as yourself. Your character has a name, a past, a job and opinions.
- IC (in character): everything your character says and does inside the story.
- OOC (out of character): you, the real person, talking about real things. Most servers want OOC talk kept to a minimum in game, usually in a separate chat or on Discord.
- "The city": what players call the server and its world. "I was in the city last night" means "I played on the server".

The big rule breakers
Metagaming
Using information your character could not know. Example: you watch someone's stream, see where they hid the loot, then your character "just happens" to go there. That is metagaming, and it is one of the most common reasons for bans in RP.
Powergaming
Forcing an outcome on other players or doing things that are impossible in real life. Saying "I knock you out and take all your stuff" without giving the other person any chance to react is powergaming. So is pulling a full arsenal out of your pocket.
Fail RP
Acting in a way no real person would. Driving a sports car at full speed through the desert with no damage, or ignoring a gun pointed at your head, is fail RP. Good RP means caring about your character's life. Nobody expects a perfect performance, though: small mistakes happen, and most players are happy to help a new face who is clearly trying.
RDM and VDM
RDM (random deathmatch) means attacking or killing someone without a roleplay reason. VDM (vehicle deathmatch) means using a car as a weapon without a reason, like running people over for fun. Both are banned almost everywhere.
Combat logging
Quitting the game in the middle of a fight, arrest or robbery to escape the consequences. Servers treat this very seriously.
Life and death rules
- Value of life: your character should act like they want to stay alive. If three people point weapons at you, you don't fight back with a wrench. You comply, talk or try something smart.
- NLR (new life rule): after your character "dies" and respawns, they usually forget the events that led to their death. Many servers also forbid going back to the same place for a while.
Server and city words
- Whitelist: a server you can only join after your application is approved. Public servers have no whitelist.
- PD: the police department. EMS: emergency medical services, the people who revive you after a crash or a fight.
- Priority and cooldown: many cities limit how often big crimes can happen. When a "priority" is active, the police are busy with a major event. After a big crime, a "cooldown" starts and nobody can start another one for a while. This gives the PD a fair chance and keeps the city from turning into constant chaos.
- Character / "char": the person you play. Many servers let you have more than one, but your characters usually can't share money, items or information.
- Staff / admins: the team that enforces rules. If something goes wrong, report it calmly through the server's Discord or report system.
Find a city and practise
Reading the dictionary is one thing; using it is another. Pick a city from our live GTA RP server list, filter by your language and join its Discord. These are the most popular roleplay servers right now:
