GTA VI has two main characters: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. They live in the state of Leonida and, according to Rockstar's page, become part of a criminal conspiracy after a simple score goes wrong. Here is what newer interviews add.
Key takeaways
- Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are the two protagonists, and the story takes place in the state of Leonida.
- Lucia is described as the first playable female protagonist in the series, with her own voice and backstory.
- Fast switching between the two was seen in the Extended Look.
- No online mode has been announced.
Lucia: first playable female protagonist
LOVE Magazine's issue 27 interview, covered by Vice on October 2, 2026, describes Lucia as the first playable female protagonist in the series with her own voice and backstory. The story is described as having a Bonnie-and-Clyde feel.
Switching between the two
TechRadar's roundup of the Extended Look mentions fast switching between Lucia and Jason. GameSpot notes that Lucia begins in prison, so Jason may be the first character you play. That is GameSpot's inference, not an official statement.
The team behind the story
The LOVE Magazine piece names writers Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern and Alexa D'Agostino. Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's SVP of Narrative, says the world is exaggerated: "louder, wilder."
What we know about the setting
The game takes place in Leonida, with Vice City at its center. The Extended Look and the Game Informer cover story showed day and night cycles, localized weather and a lot of everyday activities. A separate line from LOVE Magazine mentions "a home for the family and their debts paid off" as a theme. Read more in our Vice City to Leonida guide.
What is not confirmed
- The full story and its length
- How much each character can be played
- Whether there is an online mode. None has been announced.
Watch the Extended Look
The best way to feel the tone is to watch the 26-minute Extended Look. It is the official gameplay presentation from Rockstar.

Why two protagonists change the game
GTA V had three playable characters, and the switching between them became a signature feature. Two protagonists connected by a criminal conspiracy suggest a more personal story, similar to the Bonnie-and-Clyde tone described in the interview coverage. For players, it can also mean two different views of the same world.
How to follow the story without spoilers
- Stick to official trailers, the Extended Look and interviews quoted by major outlets.
- Avoid "leaked story" posts and videos. They are often wrong, and always spoil the experience.
- Mute or filter keywords on social media during launch week.
- Remember that many streams show early gameplay, so use the spoiler options in your player.
Common questions we see
Is Lucia playable from the start? GameSpot notes that she begins in prison, so Jason may be the first character, but this is an inference. Will there be co-op? Rockstar has announced nothing about online or co-op play.
