The story of PGL Major Antwerp 2022
FaZe Clan became the first international team to win a CS:GO Major. The roster of rain, broky, Twistzz, karrigan and ropz, built from several countries, beat the defending champions Natus Vincere 2–0 in the grand final in the Sportpaleis, and rain was MVP. The prize pool of $1,000,000 was smaller than the $2,000,000 of the previous Major. The war in Ukraine left marks on the event: Virtus.pro played under a neutral name, "Outsiders", because of sanctions tied to the invasion of Ukraine, and Cloud9 acquired the roster of Gambit Esports after Gambit’s owner MTS faced sanctions. The win for the team built around the veteran in-game leader karrigan came against s1mple’s Natus Vincere, the defending champions.
Format
Two 16-team Swiss-system group stages (Challengers and Legends), then an eight-team single-elimination playoff with best-of-three series. 24 teams took part, and the prize pool was $1,000,000.
