The story of IEM Rio Major 2022
The first Major ever held in Brazil, a country that had produced Luminosity, SK and FURIA, was delivered by ESL with a sold-out arena: tickets went in less than an hour. It was an event that had been planned for May 2020, was postponed during the pandemic and then cancelled, with Valve choosing PGL Major Stockholm 2021 as the next Major instead. In the end the title went to Outsiders, the neutral name under which Virtus.pro played because of sanctions against Russia, who beat Heroic 2–0 in the final. Dzhami "Jame" Ali was MVP, with FL1T, fame, n0rb3r7 and qikert in the line-up and dastan as coach. Defending champions FaZe Clan were knocked out in the Legends stage by Bad News Eagles.
Format
Two 16-team Swiss-system group stages, then an eight-team single-elimination playoff with best-of-three series. 24 teams took part, and the prize pool was $1,250,000.
