The story of PGL Major Stockholm 2021
After two years without a Major, Stockholm brought live crowds back, and it ended with the result many fans had waited for: Natus Vincere won their first Major title. They beat G2 Esports 2–0 in the Avicii Arena, and they did it without losing a single map in the entire tournament. Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev was MVP, the line-up of s1mple, electroNic, Boombl4, Perfecto and b1t was coached by B1ad3, and the winners’ prize was $1,000,000 of a doubled $2,000,000 pool. The tournament took place after the 2020 Rio Major had been postponed and eventually cancelled, which is why Valve introduced the Regional Major Rankings (RMR) circuit for qualification. Astralis, the defending champions of the last Major, were eliminated in the Legends stage after a loss to Team Vitality, and Valve replaced Train with Ancient in the active duty map pool before the event.
Format
Two 16-team Swiss-system group stages, then an eight-team single-elimination playoff with best-of-three series. 24 teams took part, and the prize pool was $2,000,000.
