The story of ELEAGUE Major: Boston 2018
The Boston Major is the one where North America won. Cloud9 beat FaZe Clan 2–1 in one of the most dramatic finals in CS history: they lost the first map on Mirage 14–16, took Overpass 16–10, and won a deciding Inferno 22–19 in overtime. tarik was named MVP by HLTV, while ELEAGUE gave its U.S. Air Force MVP award to Tyler "Skadoodle" Latham. The final drew more than 1.8 million viewers, a record at the time. The event also changed the format: it was the first with 24 teams and with a New Challengers stage replacing the offline qualifier. It was not smooth: the roster-lock rules, set months in advance, forced teams such as SK Gaming and Team Liquid to play with stand-ins, which players and journalists criticized. TyLoo withdrew over a visa problem involving BnTeT and was replaced by Flash Gaming, and 100 Thieves withdrew over immigration issues. Teams also complained that one quarterfinal and both semifinals were played on the same day.
Format
The Major expanded from 16 to 24 teams: two 16-team Swiss stages (New Challengers and New Legends), then an eight-team single-elimination playoff (Champions stage), best-of-three. 24 teams took part, and the prize pool was $1,000,000.
