The story of PGL Major Kraków 2017
The first Major organized by PGL produced the biggest upset of the era: Gambit Esports, a CIS roster, beat Immortals 2–1 in the final after losing the first map on Cobblestone 4–16 and winning Train 16–11 and Inferno 16–10. Dauren "AdreN" Kystaubayev was MVP. Both finalists were underdogs: Gambit had beaten Fnatic and Astralis, Immortals had beaten BIG and Virtus.pro. For Gambit it was the first Major title for a team from Asia and only the third for a non-European team. The map pool changed before the event as well: Dust II was removed and a revamped Inferno returned. Around the Major, the so-called "French shuffle" sent kennyS and apEX to G2 Esports, a move that reset the power balance of French Counter-Strike.
Format
A 16-team Swiss group stage (best-of-one, teams play until three wins or three losses), followed by an eight-team single-elimination playoff with best-of-three series. 16 teams took part, and the prize pool was $1,000,000.
