PC Guide reported on October 12, 2026 that Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, said in an interview with LOVE magazine that the studio has a dedicated group of writers for pedestrian dialogue, the background conversations you overhear while moving through the world. James Horton, Rockstar's open world writing director, also spoke.
According to the report, the pedestrian dialogue team is based in Los Angeles, while advertising and comedy writers work across New York, Los Angeles and London. Humphries says small details such as street conversations, jokes and ads help make the world feel alive, and that varied writer backgrounds give the team more perspectives.
Horton argued that every person a player meets is effectively the lead of their own story, so the idea of 'background' characters does not fully apply. Conversations are meant to sound convincing even if you catch only a few seconds while driving past, and to hold up if you stop to listen.
What this is and is not: it is an interview with Rockstar staff, so it describes intent, not a feature you can check yet. How it feels in the finished game will only be clear after November 19.
