TF2

Team Fortress 2 has nine classes: Scout, Soldier, Pyro, Demoman, Heavy, Engineer, Medic, Sniper and Spy. For most beginners, Soldier or Heavy is the easiest start, and Medic is a great choice if you enjoy helping a team. The official wiki sorts the classes into Offense, Defense and Support. Facts below were checked on the official TF2 wiki and Steam page on October 14, 2026. The wiki does not rate difficulty, so our beginner picks are our own advice.

Key takeaways

  • Nine classes, three roles: Offense (Scout, Soldier, Pyro), Defense (Demoman, Heavy, Engineer) and Support (Medic, Sniper, Spy).
  • TF2 is free to play on Steam, and the store page calls the nine classes a broad range of tactical abilities.
  • Good first classes: Soldier, Heavy, Medic. Take your time with Spy and Engineer.
  • The wiki says classes can be played outside their assigned role, so the roles are a guide, not a rule.
  • Try every class in a quiet community server before you decide.

Offense: Scout, Soldier and Pyro

Scout is the fastest class. The wiki describes it as a quick capturer of points and objectives that uses speed and double jumps. Tip: do not chase kills alone. Run to the objective, capture it and escape when enemies arrive. With only 125 health you cannot trade hits for long.

Soldier fires rockets and can rocket jump to attack from unexpected directions. He is slow but sturdy, and rockets still hurt when you miss slightly, which forgives bad aim. Tip: aim at the enemy's feet and reload behind cover. Learn rocket jumping later, in a practice server.

Pyro is an ambusher who uses fire and also extinguishes burning teammates. Tip: flank, do not walk straight at a group, and put out teammates who are on fire.

Defense: Demoman, Heavy and Engineer

Demoman guards areas with stickybombs that explode when enemies approach. It is a thinking class: you place traps and time them. Tip: put stickies on choke points and around the point you defend, not in the open.

Heavy is a tough close-range gunner who holds enemies back. With 300 health he survives mistakes, which is why many new players enjoy him. Tip: stay near a Medic or a health kit. Heavy is slow, so avoid wide open ground.

Engineer builds Sentry Guns, Teleporters and Dispensers. Tip: build near your team, not alone in a corner, and put the Teleporter exit close to the front line. Engineer asks you to manage buildings and fight at once, so expect a learning curve.

Support: Medic, Sniper and Spy

Medic is a mobile healer who can overheal teammates and grant buffs. Tip: stay close behind a teammate who is fighting, heal the person doing the most, and do not rush ahead alone. If you like helping people, this is a satisfying first class.

Sniper removes key targets from far away and uses Jarate to extinguish allies and boost damage. Tip: find a safe spot with a view, then check behind you often. Aim practice matters, so expect misses at first.

Spy sneaks behind enemy lines to disable and deconstruct buildings and to assassinate key targets. Tip: avoid running past enemies in the open, and learn what the enemy team is doing first. It is a hard class for a first week.

Which classes are easiest for new players?

  1. Soldier: good health and forgiving rockets. Learn the maps and the objective.
  2. Heavy: lots of health and simple controls. Learn when to retreat.
  3. Medic: your job is clear, and every teammate is glad to see you. Learn to stay alive.
  4. Pyro or Sniper: second step, once you know the maps.
  5. Engineer, Demoman, Spy: later, because they ask for planning and game knowledge.

This is our own opinion based on how the classes play and on the wiki descriptions, not an official ranking. Any class can be fun if you practice.

Team composition basics

A balanced team has some offense to push, some defense to hold, and at least one support class. The wiki gives no official ideal setup, so treat these as general habits.

  • Have one Medic if possible, and heal the players who fight in front.
  • Do not stack five Snipers; someone has to capture the point.
  • If the enemy has a strong Sentry, a Demoman or Spy can help remove it.
  • If your team keeps losing the same fight, ask in chat who can switch.

How to pick a class: Casual vs community servers

In Casual and Competitive, you queue through Valve matchmaking. The wiki says Competitive supports 6v6 with no class or weapon bans, and Casual matches can start with fewer than 24 players. We did not find an official wiki line on class limits in Casual, so look at the class screen in game. Community servers are run by players, and the Community server wiki page says hosts can set a class slot limit or Highlander limitations, so a class may be full on a server. Highlander means one player per class, which makes class choice matter more.

For practice, join a quiet community server from the TF2 server list and try each class on an easy map. Our community server guide shows the steps, and the modes guide explains Saxton Hale, Dodgeball and MGE. In Mann vs. Machine, classes also use upgrades, see the MvM guide.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing Spy or Sniper first and getting frustrated by the learning curve.
  • Playing alone far from the team or the objective.
  • Staying on one class even when the team needs a Medic or a defender.
  • Ignoring the objective just to chase kills.

FAQ

What is the best TF2 class for beginners?

Soldier and Heavy are the easiest for most new players because they have plenty of health. Medic is also friendly if you like supporting teammates. This is our advice, not an official ranking.

How many classes are in TF2?

There are nine: Scout, Soldier, Pyro, Demoman, Heavy, Engineer, Medic, Sniper and Spy. The wiki groups them into Offense, Defense and Support.

Can I change class in the middle of a match?

Usually yes in normal modes, and you can switch when you respawn. Some modes and servers have limits, and in Mann vs. Machine you cannot switch during a wave.

Do community servers limit classes?

They can. The wiki says hosts can set a class slot limit or Highlander limitations, so a class may be full. Check the server name and rules.
