What is a game drop?

Minecraft used to get one huge update a year. Now Mojang ships several smaller updates, called game drops, and gives each a version number. The number 26.3 means the third drop of the year 2026. Because drops are smaller, they arrive more often and each one focuses on a few ideas. Wilderness Bound is about camping, exploring and cozy details.

What Wilderness Bound adds

Cushions	Wool blocks you can sit on, in 16 colors. You craft them from three matching wool slabs.
Straw Beds	Single-use beds made from hay bales. They let you sleep without changing your spawn point.
Stairs and slabs	Wool and concrete now have stair and slab versions, which helps builders.
Explorer maps	Maps are now separate items with their own icons. There are new maps that lead to Abandoned Camps and other structures.

Changes that can surprise you

Improved Transparency uses a new method to draw see-through blocks. It looks better, but it is expected to cost more performance.
Borderless Fullscreen is now the default, and the Raw Input mouse setting was removed.
The game now uses SDL3 for windows and input instead of GLFW.
The white-list property is now on by default for servers. If you host a server, check this before friends try to join.
World Options moved to the pause menu, where the Open to LAN button used to be.

How to try the new content

Open the Minecraft Launcher and make sure the latest release is selected.
Create a new world, or travel to unexplored land in an old one. Biomes and structures only generate in chunks you have not visited yet.
Look for cold forests with orange leaves. Use an Explorer map if you find one.
Sit on a Cushion, craft a Straw Bed for a quick nap and build with the new stairs.

Minecraft on Switch 2: October 27

Mojang announced October 27, 2026 for the native Switch 2 version. It uses Vibrant Visuals as the default look, which adds directional lighting, volumetric fog, moving shadows and reflective water. Vibrant Visuals is not available in some cases, such as split-screen play and certain Marketplace worlds. The Super Mario Mash-Up pack is updated for the new graphics.

Owners of the Switch version are promised a digital upgrade path, and save data carries over. Mojang had not shared the price or timing of that upgrade when we checked. Some outlets say the upgrade is free for many players and others say it may cost money, so wait for Mojang to publish the details. Console online play also needs a separate online subscription.

The Sift and what comes next

At Minecraft Live in September 2026, Mojang revealed The Sift. It would be the fourth dimension after the Overworld, the Nether and the End, and the first new one in over 14 years. It was first shown for the separate game Minecraft Dungeons II, which is due on Switch and Switch 2 on September 29, 2026. Mojang has said it is coming to Java and Bedrock next year. How it will work in survival has not been explained.

The same event gave a first look at Ice Caves, a future game drop with a cave biome full of icicles, glowing ice crystals, calcite and a frozen zombie variant. No date has been given.
