The story of StarLadder Berlin Major 2019
Berlin 2019 was the peak of the Astralis era. They beat AVANGAR 2–0, 16–6 on Inferno and 16–5 on Dust II, and with their fourth Major title became the only team to have won four CS:GO Majors and the only one to win three in a row. Nicolai "dev1ce" Reedtz was MVP, which gave him two Major MVP awards, level with Marcelo "coldzera" David. AVANGAR, an underdog from the CIS region with Jame, buster, qikert, Sanji and AdreN, reached the final and lost it. Valve changed the map pool around the event: Cache was removed and Vertigo was added for the first time. Boston 2018 champion Cloud9 failed to qualify through the Americas Minor and later forfeited its third-place qualifier spot, and Lazarus Gaming withdrew from the Americas Minor after a roster issue involving a permanently banned player, with Luminosity Gaming replacing it. The Berlin Major was the last one played before the pandemic paused the Major calendar for two years.
Format
Two 16-team Swiss-system group stages, then an eight-team best-of-three single-elimination playoff. 24 teams took part, and the prize pool was $1,000,000.
