The story of ELEAGUE Major: Atlanta 2017
Atlanta 2017 introduced the Swiss system to the Majors and gave Astralis their first title. After nine playoff appearances the Danish team finally reached a final, beat Virtus.pro 2–1 (Virtus.pro took Nuke 16–12, Astralis won Overpass 16–14 and Train after leading 15–14 and winning the last round), and Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye became the youngest MVP in Major history at the time. The tournament also eliminated the two-time defending champion: SK Gaming lost to Virtus.pro in the playoffs. The roster changes around the event shaped the next years: the former Team Dignitas line-up left the organization and was signed by F.C. Copenhagen and Nordisk Film as North. Astralis beat Virtus.pro again in the June 2017 "Clash for Cash" rematch for $250,000, a sign that this was not a one-off win.
Format
The first Major with a Swiss-system group stage for 16 teams, followed by an eight-team single-elimination playoff with best-of-three series. 16 teams took part, and the prize pool was $1,000,000.
