The story of BLAST.tv Paris Major 2023
Paris 2023 was the last CS:GO Major, and the first organized by BLAST. In front of a home crowd in the Accor Arena, Team Vitality beat GamerLegion 2–0 (16–6 on Overpass, 16–13 on Nuke), and Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut was MVP. Vitality’s win made them the last CS:GO world champions before Counter-Strike 2 took over, with the French core of apEX and ZywOo and the Danish veterans dupreeh and Magisk plus Spinx, all led by coach zonic. GamerLegion’s run as a low-seeded finalist was one of the best underdog stories of the Major era. The path to Paris had its own twist: Virtus.pro, the defending champions competing as Outsiders, were eliminated by MOUZ in the European qualifiers, making them the first defending Major champions to miss the next Major. ESL and BLAST had lifted their ban on Russian organizations on March 22, 2023.
Format
16 teams played a Swiss-style Challengers stage; the top 8 advanced to the Legends stage, joined by 8 teams with byes; the top 8 from Legends advanced to a single-elimination Champions stage, all matches best-of-three. 24 teams took part, and the prize pool was $1,250,000.
