The story of ESL One Katowice 2014
The second Major moved to the Spodek Arena in Katowice, a venue that became synonymous with Counter-Strike, and ended with a home-region celebration: Virtus.pro, the Polish roster, beat Ninjas in Pyjamas 2–0 in the final. The top eight teams of DreamHack Winter 2013 entered as Legends, iBUYPOWER and Vox Eminor were directly invited, and six more teams came through an online European qualifier, with Virtus.pro advancing through the Polish regional qualifier. That made the win a story of a qualifier team beating the established order, in front of a Polish crowd. The stream peaked at more than 250,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch, far above the first Major’s peak.
Format
Four groups of four in the GSL format (best-of-one), then an eight-team single-elimination playoff with best-of-three series. 16 teams took part, and the prize pool was $250,000.
