The story of ESL One Cologne 2014

Ninjas in Pyjamas won their first Major at ESL One Cologne 2014, beating Fnatic 2–1 in a final that went the distance on Cobblestone, Cache and Inferno. Adam "friberg" Friberg was named MVP. The event took place during Gamescom, which gave Counter-Strike its first truly mass-media backdrop: the four-day tournament reached about 2.95 million unique viewers, with more than 400,000 watching the grand final at the same time. It was also a Major of controversy over map choices, because Valve released the new Overpass map only a month before the event and many players felt that was too close to a tournament of this size. LGB eSports disbanded before the event, and its Legends spot went to an Indian qualifier, Team Wolf, which lost both group matches. For NiP, the win cemented their status as the dominant Swedish team of the first CS:GO years.

Format

Four groups in a GSL-style format (best-of-one), then an eight-team single-elimination playoff with best-of-three series. 16 teams took part, and the prize pool was $250,000.
