The story of DreamHack Winter 2013
DreamHack Winter 2013 was the first Major Championship of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and the event that gave the Major system its shape: sixteen teams, six of them invited and ten qualified, fighting for a $250,000 prize pool that was partly funded by the community. Fnatic, a Swedish organization, beat Ninjas in Pyjamas 2–1 in an all-Swedish final, and Jesper "JW" Wecksell was named MVP. The tournament was an early sign of how big the game could become online: the broadcast peaked at 145,000 concurrent viewers across Twitch and the in-game viewing client for a game that had been released only about a year earlier. Natus Vincere, a name that would dominate later Majors, went 0–2 in its group and did not advance.
Format
A 16-team group stage in the GSL format (best-of-one matches), followed by an 8-team single-elimination playoff played as best-of-three series. 16 teams took part, and the prize pool was $250,000.
