Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Digital pre-orders can start the campaign a week early, on October 16. Upgrading from Standard to Vault costs $30. The Vault Edition is digital only. A Switch 2 price was not found when we checked, so look at the Nintendo eShop for your region.
Is the Vault Edition worth it?
The Vault is mostly cosmetics and a season of BlackCell, which is a premium battle pass tier. If you only want to play the campaign and multiplayer, the Standard Edition has the same game. Vault makes sense if you already buy the battle pass every season, because the included season covers part of the extra $30. If you rarely buy passes, skip it. You can upgrade later for the same $30 gap.
Pre-order bonuses and early access
Digital pre-orders get the Hunter Killer operator skin, the Inner Circuit blueprint and a camo pack. They also unlock campaign early access from October 16, 2026. PC players who pre-purchase can preload from October 15 at 9 a.m. Pacific time.
The PlayStation Blog adds a discount: owners of a Call of Duty game released in 2019 or later on the same platform account can get 10 percent off the Vault Edition when pre-ordering. Free-to-play and mobile titles do not count, and the offer ends at launch on October 23.
What is in the game
Campaign
You play Private Park, a young South Korean soldier in his first real combat. North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of the peninsula. Captain Price returns, now acting outside the system as he hunts a powerful weapon. Missions move between Korea, New York, Paris and Mumbai.
Multiplayer
Day one includes 12 core 6v6 maps, dedicated Gunfight maps and several Big War maps for large vehicle battles. A new mode called Kill Block takes place in a live-fire training facility where the layout changes between rounds. A new weapon system called Ballistic Authority covers aiming, handling and sound, and Activision says there is no bloom. For every map and mode, see our maps and modes guide.
DMZ and Warzone
DMZ, the extraction mode, plays solo or in squads. You enter a conflict zone, grab advanced technology and try to get out, with shifting weather and roaming enemies. Warzone will move to Modern Warfare 4 content with Season 1, which Activision has only called "shortly after" launch. No date has been given.
The beta is over
The multiplayer beta ran from August 21 to September 1, 2026, with open access from August 28. It included core 6v6 maps, a campaign mission and a Warzone Resurgence map called Zodiac. There is no beta to join now, so beware of sites that say otherwise.
PC details in short
Reports list 115 GB of SSD space for every tier, a Windows 10 minimum, and a requirement for TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. The game is sold on Steam, Battle.net and Xbox on PC. Read the full tables in our system requirements guide.
Game Pass and subscriptions
Modern Warfare 4 will not launch on Game Pass. Reports say it is not expected there before late 2027. Online play on PlayStation needs PlayStation Plus, and on Xbox it needs a Game Pass tier with online play, while PC needs neither.
Platform notes
On PC you can buy through Steam, Battle.net or the Xbox app, and one Call of Duty account links them together. Progress and COD Points are tied to the platform family, so a purchase on PlayStation does not unlock the game on Xbox. Crossplay and cross-progression between consoles and PC are available in recent Call of Duty games, but we did not confirm the exact Modern Warfare 4 settings, so check the official site. On Switch 2, expect the digital version first and look for a price in the Nintendo eShop.
Which edition should you buy?
- Campaign only: Standard, digital if you want early access on October 16.
- Casual multiplayer: Standard. You lose nothing in gameplay.
- Battle pass buyer, cosmetics fan: Vault, ideally with the 10 percent pre-order discount if you qualify.
