Why does FiveM lag more than normal GTA V?

FiveM servers stream custom cars, clothes and maps, and run many scripts. That adds load on the CPU, memory and network.

Which setting costs the most FPS in GTA V?

Shadows, grass and population density are among the biggest costs. Lower them first.

Does an SSD help GTA V?

Yes. Streaming the city from an SSD reduces stutter compared with a hard drive.

How can I tell lag from low FPS?

Low FPS makes your own picture choppy. Network lag makes other players and cars jump around.

GTA V Lag and Low FPS Fix: Settings, Drivers and FiveM Tips

GTA V can lag on older PCs, and FiveM roleplay servers add extra load because they stream custom cars, clothes and maps. This checklist covers both. Check the calculator if you are unsure about your hardware, and see our FiveM errors and fixes for connection problems.

Key takeaways

In FiveM, a laggy server and a weak PC feel the same. Test on a few servers.
Update graphics drivers and close background apps first.
Lower the settings that cost the most: shadows, grass, population and distance scaling.
Keep an eye on the video memory bar in the graphics menu.

System fixes

Update your graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel.
Pick a high performance power plan and plug laptops in.
Close background apps, browsers and overlays.
Move the game to an SSD if you can. Streaming a big city from a hard drive causes stutter.
Check heat. Clean dust and make sure fans work.

Graphics settings that matter

Setting	What to do
Shadow quality and soft shadows	Lower first. They cost a lot of FPS.
Grass quality	Lower. Big FPS cost in open areas.
Population density and variety	Lower for more FPS in busy streets.
Distance scaling	Lower if the CPU is weak.
MSAA	Turn off or use FXAA.
Texture quality	Match your video memory. Do not go over the memory bar.

FiveM and roleplay server tips

Try several servers. Some run heavy scripts and many custom cars.
Prefer servers with fewer players if your PC is weak. Pick one from the GTA V server list and check the player count.
If you see long loading and stutter, clear the FiveM cache files and reconnect.
Use a cable connection and close downloads to avoid ping spikes.
