Call of Duty is a big series, and the names can be confusing. In October 2026 you can play Warzone, Black Ops 7 and soon Modern Warfare 4. This guide explains each one in plain words and shows how to start. The games are rated for adults, so younger players should read our parents guide first.
Key takeaways
- Warzone is free to download. You do not need to buy any other Call of Duty game.
- Black Ops 7 is the current paid game. Season 6, the last big season, started on September 17, 2026.
- Modern Warfare 4 is due on October 23, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
- On PC, one launcher app called Call of Duty on Steam covers all three.
The three games
| Game | What it is | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Warzone | Large battle royale and Resurgence modes, 2022 version | Free to play |
| Black Ops 7 | Campaign, multiplayer and Zombies, released November 14, 2025 | Paid |
| Modern Warfare 4 | Campaign, 6v6 multiplayer, DMZ extraction mode | Paid, from $70 (reported) |
Prices and dates were checked on October 9, 2026 and can change.
How to start
- Pick a platform. Black Ops 7 and Warzone run on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Warzone no longer supports PS4 and Xbox One, and Modern Warfare 4 does not come to them at all.
- Create or log in to an Activision account. You need it to play online.
- On PC, install the Call of Duty app from Steam, Battle.net or Xbox on PC. The Steam page says it supports Modern Warfare 4, Black Ops 7 and Warzone.
- Start with Warzone if you want to try it for free. Learn the controls in a casual match.
- Check your storage space. PC games in this series are very large, and Modern Warfare 4 asks for 115 GB of SSD space.
Tips for your first week
- Turn on crossplay only if you want to meet players on other systems.
- Play team modes first. They teach maps and weapons faster than solo play.
- Lower your sensitivity if you miss a lot, then raise it slowly.
- Do not buy accounts, boosts or cheat software. They break the rules and can get you banned.
