Apex Legends is a team shooter. Players fight other players, so there is violence and blood, though it is a sci-fi setting. It is free to download. This guide explains the rating, the chat and the spending, based on EA, Internet Matters and the Australian eSafety Commissioner. Checked on October 9, 2026.
Key takeaways
- ESRB rating: T (Teen) for Blood and Violence. PEGI rating: 16.
- The ESRB also lists Users Interact and In-Game Purchases (includes random items).
- Voice chat with strangers is possible and can be switched off.
- Spending is optional, but packs may include random items.
Age rating
EA lists ESRB T, and Steam shows the same. Internet Matters says it is PEGI 16 in the UK and Europe because of sustained violence towards human characters. eSafety lists a minimum age of 13.
Chat and contact
You play in a squad with people you may not know. By default your child can talk to strangers, and voice chat is harder to moderate than text. You can turn off voice chat in the game settings. Players can use pings instead of speaking. During a match you can mute a teammate from the inventory screen. On consoles, your child can set up a lobby of friends first.
Spending
The game is free, so no purchase approval is needed to start. Internet Matters says purchases mostly unlock cosmetics or characters faster. Apex Packs work like loot boxes. Talk to your child about why random items can lead to overspending.
Steps for parents
- Play a match together to see what it is like.
- Turn off voice chat or limit it to friends.
- Teach your child to mute and report rude players.
- Set spending limits through the EA app, Steam, Epic, or your console family settings.
- Agree on play time and breaks.
Watching streams
Streamers may swear or show chat.
