The Witcher 3 is a huge open-world RPG, so the first hours can feel like too much. You play Geralt of Rivia, who searches for his adopted daughter Ciri while war tears the land apart. This guide gives spoiler-free advice on how to start and how to enjoy Gwent.
Key takeaways
- The story is long, and side quests and contracts are part of the fun.
- Do not rush into the expansions before your level is high enough.
- Gwent is a side activity in the game, and it is optional.
- Remastered did not add or remove quests or Gwent cards, according to a third-party check.
How to approach the early game
- Follow the main quest until the game opens up, then explore.
- Take monster contracts from notice boards; they teach you to prepare with potions and oils.
- Read quest levels in the journal and avoid fights far above your level.
- Save often, and keep a manual save before big choices.

Quests worth your time
Long side quests tell some of the best stories in the game. In Velen, the questline around the Bloody Baron is often discussed by players, but we will not spoil it. Treat contracts as small mysteries: find clues, then fight. Our DLC and endings guide lists when to start Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
Gwent for beginners
Gwent is a card game you can play with many characters in the world. In the standalone version, decks have 25 cards and a match is best of three rounds. The game began as a side activity in The Witcher 3 and later became its own free game.
- Win rounds, not just single turns.
- Collect cards by winning matches and exploring.
- Do not worry if you skip it; the main story does not depend on it.
The standalone Gwent client lost official support in October 2023, but the in-game minigame stays in Witcher 3. Gwent is also expected to return in some form in the future, but CD PROJEKT has not announced Gwent for Witcher 4.
