OW

Overwatch (many people still say Overwatch 2) is a team shooter by Blizzard. Two teams of five fight over objectives, and each player picks a hero with unique abilities. It is free to play, and Blizzard lists over 30 heroes. This guide gives you the basics so your first matches feel less confusing.

Key takeaways

  • Every hero belongs to one of three roles: Tank, Damage or Support.
  • Since 2026 each role also has sub-roles with small passive bonuses.
  • Start in Quick Play. Try Competitive or Stadium once you know a few heroes.
  • The game is free on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, with cross-play.

The three roles

Tank heroes are big. They take space, block damage and protect the team. Damage heroes deal most of the kills. Support heroes heal and boost allies. A balanced team has one Tank, two Damage and two Support heroes in most modes.

What are sub-roles?

Blizzard added sub-roles in Season 1 of 2026. Each one gives its heroes a small passive bonus. Heroes can change sub-role in later patches. For example, Sombra moved from Damage to Support in Season 5. The table shows the bonuses as listed in Blizzard's post.

Game modes

  • Quick Play: casual matches. Best place to learn.
  • Competitive: ranked matches with attack and defense rounds and hero bans.
  • Arcade: rotating fun modes such as Mystery Heroes.
  • Stadium: a different style with upgrades. At launch it was a best-of-7 match, third-person by default, with its own ranked system.

Maps use objectives such as Control, Escort, Hybrid, Push and Flashpoint. In short: hold a point, push a payload, or both.
