The Elder Scrolls has two entry points for new players: Skyrim from 2011 and Oblivion Remastered from 2025. They share a world but not much else. This comparison uses Wikipedia and Bethesda's news.
Key takeaways
- Oblivion Remastered launched on April 22, 2025 and reached Nintendo Switch 2 on August 11, 2026.
- It was developed by Virtuos and Bethesda Game Studios and had 9 million players after three months.
- Skyrim has sold 65 million copies as of July 2026.
- Metacritic: Oblivion Remastered about 80 to 82; Skyrim Special Edition 74 to 82 depending on platform.
- Elder Scrolls VI has no release date. Treat "2028" as a press report only.

Oblivion Remastered news
The Switch 2 version launched on August 11, 2026, and Patch 1.1 arrived on September 17, 2026 with crash fixes. It won Best Remake or Remaster at the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards, while Digital Foundry criticized the PC performance.
Which first?
- Skyrim: a huge modding scene, many editions and a lot of beginner guides.
- Oblivion Remastered: a classic with modern visuals, good if you want something older in spirit.
Either works. Start with the one on your platform. Our Skyrim guide is ready if you pick that one.
Elder Scrolls VI: official, reported, rumor
The Elder Scrolls VI was announced with a teaser at E3 on June 10, 2018, and no release date or window exists. On February 18, 2026, Todd Howard said it is a "classic Bethesda" RPG on Creation Engine 3 and that it passed a major internal milestone. Wikipedia reports July 2026 Xbox layoffs that included more than 50 Bethesda Game Studios staff, and says Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported the game is at least two years away, which would mean 2028 at the earliest. That is a press report, not an announcement. Wikipedia lists Windows and Xbox as platforms; PS5 is not confirmed. The masked-title "Sentinel" theory is unconfirmed.
