In Fortnite, a community-made game is called an island. Players build islands with Fortnite Creative or with UEFN, then publish them for everyone. You can play them for free from the same menu as the main modes.

Key takeaways

  • An island is a map or game made by a player or studio.
  • Creative is built into Fortnite and needs no code. UEFN is a free PC editor with more power.
  • You can search by island name, island code or creator code from the Play menu.
  • Island quality varies, so check the rating and use the favorites option.

As a player, you do not need to know which one made an island. Both kinds are played the same way.

How to find an island

  1. Open Fortnite and choose Play in the upper-left corner.
  2. Scroll to the search field.
  3. Type an island name, an island code, or a creator code.
  4. Open the thumbnail and read the description and player count.
  5. To save it, open the three-dot menu on the thumbnail and mark it as a favorite.
  6. To see more from the same maker, choose View Developer.

What kinds of islands exist

Islands cover many styles: obstacle courses called deathruns, hide and seek, tycoon games, practice maps for aim or building, and team shooters. Some studios also publish big, polished games. Pick by the title, the description and how many people are playing now. A busy island is usually easier to join and more fun.

Tips for safe play

Islands are made by the community, so content and chat can vary. Purchases inside creator islands are not refundable under Epic's rules. Parents can limit Creative and UEFN access and set separate Play and Create time limits in Epic's parental controls. See our parental controls guide.
