CS2 community servers: surf, bhop, KZ, retakes & how to join

Matchmaking is only half of Counter-Strike 2. Community servers bring surf, bhop, zombies, jailbreak, retakes and wild custom maps — and they are free to join.

CS2

Community servers are run by players, not Valve. Every owner picks their own maps, rules and plugins, so you get game modes that official matchmaking never had. Here is what each mode is about and how to jump in.

Why community servers are so fun

Community servers can run Workshop maps, so creators keep building new surf ramps, jump courses and minigame arenas. On top of that, owners add plugins with Metamod:Source 2 and CounterStrikeSharp — that is how you get ranks, timers, custom rules and whole new modes.

Old CS:GO veterans, note this: SourceMod does not work on CS2. Plugins had to be rebuilt on the new tools, so classic modes keep coming back and new ones keep appearing.

The best part: there is no pressure. No rank to lose, no ten-player queue, no long match you can't leave. You hop in for one round or three hours, chat with regulars and leave whenever you want. Many community servers have a loyal crowd of regulars.

Surf

Surf maps (prefix surf_) are giant slanted ramps floating in the sky. You hold strafe into the ramp and glide at crazy speed without pressing forward. It is relaxing, beautiful and harder than it looks — and it secretly trains your mouse control.

Bhop and KZ

Bhop maps (bhop_) are parkour courses where you chain bunny hops to keep your speed. Miss a jump and you fall back to the last checkpoint.

KZ (kz_) is climbing at its hardest: long jump courses with timers and leaderboards. KZ players learn precise movement tricks that feel like magic once you master them.

Climbers can jump straight to the KZ list or the bhop list.

Retakes and deathmatch

Retake servers use normal competitive maps (de_ and cs_). Each round starts with the bomb already planted, and the CTs must win the site back. It is pure clutch practice — no waiting, no eco rounds.

Deathmatch servers are all about aim: instant respawns, free guns and nonstop fights. Many players warm up here for ten minutes before every match.

More modes to try

  • Zombies (ze_ zombie escape, zm_ zombie mod) — humans run or hold out while the infected hunt them down. Big lobbies, big chaos.
  • Jailbreak (jb_) — guards give orders, prisoners plot an escape. Half roleplay, half shooter.
  • AWP and aim maps (awp_, aim_) — small maps for fast duels with a fixed weapon.
  • Arena / 1v1 (am_) — you fight one opponent per small arena; win and you climb up the arenas.
  • Minigames (mg_) — party maps full of random challenges, from races to traps.
  • Hide and seek (hns) — one team hides, the other hunts. Movement skills matter more than aim.

Not sure where to start? Surf and deathmatch are the easiest for beginners. Retakes are perfect if you want to improve for competitive. Look for a server close to your region with a few players online — a low ping makes every mode feel much better.

How to join a server

There are three simple ways:

  1. From Oggo. Open the CS2 server list, pick a server with players and hit Play. Steam launches CS2 and connects you directly.
  2. In-game browser. In CS2, open the Game Servers browser (Play → Community Server Browser) and check the Internet tab. You can filter and sort by map or players.
  3. Console. Enable the developer console and type connect IP:PORT, for example connect 1.2.3.4:27015. Type disconnect to leave.

Watch before you play

Unsure what a mode looks like? Streams are the quickest preview. Catch a surf run or a jailbreak round live, then join the same type of server.
