Elden Ring starting classes explained

Elden Ring lets you pick a starting class, called an origin. The choice sets your starting level, stats and gear, but you can build any way you want later. Here are the facts from the Elden Ring Wiki and the Tarnished DLC coverage.

Key takeaways

• The Wretch starts at level 1 with every stat at 10.
• The wiki notes that no class has a better total of attribute points at the same level.
• Two new classes, Idus Knight and Heavy Knight, came with the Tarnished Pack DLC.

The classes at a glance

A dash means we did not have a verified stat to list. Open the in-game selection screen for the full numbers.

How to choose

1. Pick by playstyle. A Hero or Vagabond leans on melee. An Astrologer leans on sorcery. A Prophet leans on faith and incantations.
2. Do not stress. You can change your build with stat points later.
3. Higher starting level is not always better. A lower level class gets more points through levels, so total points are the same.

The new DLC classes

GamingBible reports that the Tarnished Pack DLC, released on August 28, 2026, adds the Idus Knight and Heavy Knight classes with new starter weapons. The same coverage lists a UK price of £3.99, but we could not confirm other regions.
