The story of MLG Major Championship: Columbus 2016
Columbus 2016 was a landmark for several reasons at once. It was the first Major in North America, the first run by Major League Gaming, and the first one not organized by ESL or DreamHack. It was also the first Counter-Strike tournament with a $1,000,000 prize pool. On the server, Luminosity Gaming, a Brazilian roster, beat Natus Vincere 2–0 and became the first non-European team to win a Major. Marcelo "coldzera" David was MVP. The path to Columbus was not smooth either: TyLoo was disqualified hours before the Asia qualifier because one of its players had a prior cheating ban, and The MongolZ could not attend because the visas of its players were declined, so Splyce took the Americas spot. The win started the era of Brazilian Counter-Strike on the world stage.
Format
Four groups of four in a GSL-style format with best-of-one matches and a best-of-three decider for the last playoff spot, then an eight-team single-elimination playoff with best-of-three series. 16 teams took part, and the prize pool was $1,000,000.
