Yes, Red Dead Online is still playable in October 2026, but it is not getting big new content. Rockstar said in July 2022 that it would stop major updates and move its focus to Grand Theft Auto VI. Since then the game has had events, bonuses and a few small story additions. This guide explains where the game stands, what you can still do, how to get it on PC, and when RedM roleplay may be the better choice. Facts were checked on October 10, 2026.
Key takeaways
- Rockstar announced in July 2022 that Red Dead Online would get no more major updates.
- Smaller content continued: seasonal events, bonus weeks and a few Telegram missions, including a July 2025 update.
- A standalone version has been sold since December 1, 2020, so you do not need the RDR2 story game to play online.
- No new major update is confirmed as of this check. Treat any rumor as unconfirmed.
- If you want deep roleplay, RedM servers are a different product with their own rules.
What happened to Red Dead Online?
Red Dead Online launched in beta in November 2018 alongside RDR2 and left beta in 2019. In July 2022, Rockstar told players that development was winding down. CGMagazine's report from July 8, 2022 says the game would not get major updates, but would still receive monthly events and new Telegram missions. It would not get new game modes, specialist roles, themed content updates or large missions. Players held in-game memorials in July 2022 to mark a year without a big update.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said later that the company heard the frustration from players. He did not promise a return of big updates in the sources checked for this article.

What content has arrived since 2022?
| Period | What was added (per Wikipedia and press) |
|---|---|
| September and October 2022 | Hardcore Telegram missions and another small update |
| 2022 to 2025 | Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas events returned each year |
| Halloween 2024 | Three Bodyguard Telegram missions |
| July 2025 | Strange Tales of the West Vol. 1 with four Telegram missions |
| December 2025 | A festive Showdown event |
| July 1 to August 3, 2026 | A bounty hunter event month with bonus rewards on bounties and posse XP, per Rockstar Intel |
The pattern is clear: Rockstar still keeps the game running and gives regular bonus periods, but there is no new roadmap. We could not find an official announcement of a big update coming. If you see claims about one, treat them as rumors until Rockstar's Newswire confirms them.
Is it worth playing in 2026?
It depends on what you want. The game still has a large world, roles such as Bounty Hunter, Trader and Collector, and freeroam events. Leaked internal numbers reported by Wikipedia say about 969,000 weekly players between June 2024 and March 2026, but the data is unofficial, so use it only as a rough sign that the game still has people. You can still find sessions, but they can feel quieter than GTA Online.
- Good if you like the RDR2 world, hunting, fishing, and relaxed co-op work.
- Good for short sessions on bonus weeks.
- Less good if you want constant new modes and weekly big content.
How to get Red Dead Online
There are two ways. Buy Red Dead Redemption 2, which includes Red Dead Online. Or buy the standalone Red Dead Online. When it launched on December 1, 2020, the standalone cost $4.99 on consoles and PC, down from $19.99, per Video Games Chronicle. It does not include the story mode. We did not confirm the current price today, so check your store, because prices change and sales are frequent. The standalone is large: VGC listed up to 123 GB.
PC details
RDR2 launched on PC on November 5, 2019. For specs, see our RDR2 PC requirements guide, and for graphics tuning use the performance guide. Red Dead Online runs on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows. Stadia shut down in January 2023.

Tips for returning players
- Check Rockstar Newswire for the current bonus week before you log in.
- Pick one role and finish its early missions, rather than buying everything.
- Play with friends in a small session when you want fewer random fights.
- Plan gold bar spending. They are a secondary currency, and 100 gold nuggets convert to one bar.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a GTA Online style update schedule.
- Buying the standalone and expecting the story mode.
- Believing rumors about a big update without a Rockstar post.
