WARDOGS beginner guide: how to start, what to buy and how to help your team

WARDOGS looks huge, but the core idea is simple: stand in the zone with more teammates than the other teams.

WD

WARDOGS is a tactical shooter for up to 100 players in three teams. To do well early, join a low-level or Infantry server, buy a simple rifle and medical gear, stay with your squad and revive teammates, because teamwork earns cash. The game is in Steam Early Access, so numbers change often. Facts here were checked on October 10, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Three teams fight over a random 2 by 2 km Control Zone. The team with the most players inside scores, and the first to 100 points wins.
  • You buy your loadout each life with cash. Teamwork earns cash, not only kills.
  • There is no locked class. Your role comes from what you buy, and you can switch.
  • Since patch 0.1.2 the Deploy screen lets you pick Official, Community, Infantry Mode or Low-Level servers.
  • Check Steam news before you play, because patches change prices and unlocks.

How a match works

Each match has a Control Zone. The team with the most teammates inside it earns points. A smaller moving hot zone counts a player as two and gives double cash and points. The map is reported to be about 256 square km, set in a fictional, run-down Eastern European region with mountains and industrial areas. Buildings and cover can be destroyed, so a safe wall may not stay safe.

Cash and loadouts

Wikipedia reports that each player starts with $10,000 to buy weapons, gear, utilities and vehicles. Your HUD shows a bank balance and the profit or loss of your current life. Cash comes from reviving squadmates, carrying teammates to the zone, holding the objective and getting kills. Cash carries over between matches. You can also die with an expensive kit and lose it, so think about price before you buy a tank.

A good starter loadout

  • A reliable assault rifle at a low price.
  • Bandages or basic medical gear.
  • Do not spend everything on the first life. Keep a small bank for your next respawn.

Pick the right server

Patch 0.1.2 added a Deploy flow with four choices: Official, Community, Infantry Mode and Low-Level. Official servers are run by the developers and have advanced filters again. Community servers are run by players and can have their own rules. Infantry and Low-Level options are made for people who do not want tanks and helicopters in their face on day one. WARDOGS has no skill-based matchmaking, so you choose your server. The game also shows your queue position when you join a full server.

Your first ten minutes

  1. Choose a Low-Level or Infantry server if you see one.
  2. Buy a simple rifle and basic medical gear first.
  3. Stay near your squad and move toward the zone together.
  4. Revive teammates when it is safe. It earns cash.
  5. Do not rush vehicles. Learn the map on foot first.
  6. Check your cash after each death, and buy only what you can afford to lose.

Roles you can try

RoleWhat it does
AssaultFront-line fighting in the zone
MedicRevives and heals, good for cash
ReconSpotting and long-range shots with scopes
SupportSupplies, hammers and base building
PilotHelicopters
DriverGround vehicles that move teams to the zone

Each role has its own progression track with unlock levels for gear and vehicles. The Season 1 patch notes moved some unlocks, for example the Support Large Hammer at level 8 and the first Driver vehicle at level 3. Those values were recorded before later patches, so read the latest notes for exact numbers.

How teamwork pays

WARDOGS pays you for helping, so think about what your team needs. If many teammates are far from the zone, a driver or pilot who delivers them earns cash and helps the score. If the front line keeps dying, a medic with revives keeps everyone in the fight. If enemies hold the zone with vehicles, a support player with the right tools can change the match. The profit and loss number on your HUD shows whether your choices work.

Settings to check

  • Voice: pick push-to-talk so you do not broadcast noise.
  • Controls: learn how to ping, revive and drop in before your first match.
  • Graphics: turn on upscaling if your frame rate is low.

Building and vehicles

Support players can build Forward Operating Bases and other structures such as mortar or anti-air positions. Buildings can be shot down. Drivers and pilots earn a lot by moving teammates to the zone. If you want to learn without pressure, ride as a passenger first.

Common mistakes

  • Running alone into the zone. You will be outnumbered by two teams at once.
  • Buying a heavy vehicle on your first life and losing it.
  • Ignoring teammates on the ground. Reviving is a main source of cash.
  • Abusing exploits or trading cash for real money. The developers reset cash and progress for this and say they have zero tolerance.
