Skyrim's mods are famous. People have changed graphics, quests, combat and more. They are also the main safety question for players. The facts below come from Wikipedia and Bethesda; the safety checklist is our advice.
Key takeaways
- Nexus Mods listed over 72,000 Skyrim mods and the Steam Workshop over 27,000 in August 2024.
- Creations replaced the Creation Club in December 2023, with both paid and free mods.
- Console mod storage rose to 15 GB on PS5 and Xbox in August 2026.
- The Switch version has no official mods.
Where mods come from
- Steam Workshop for PC players.
- Nexus Mods, a large community site.
- In-game Creations for PC and consoles, mixing paid and free items.
Mods came to PS4 and Xbox through the Special Edition in 2016. In 2015, Valve tried paid mods on Steam, and it was reversed after a petition with more than 130,000 signatures.
What changed in 2026
Bethesda's August 20 update raised console mod storage to 15 GB on PS5 and Xbox, according to Bethesda and Notebookcheck. It also added a "Most Popular" sort and new tags for Verified Creators. Bethesda says existing load orders should be unaffected but advises loading a save once.
Safety checklist
- Use mods from trusted places: the Workshop, a known site, or in-game Creations.
- Use a mod manager on PC.
- Back up your saves before you add mods.
- Avoid files from random chat servers and file hosts.
- Read comments for bugs and conflicts.
SKSE and mod compatibility between the Special and Anniversary Editions are known sources of trouble, but we did not find an official source, so check each mod's page.
