The best way to start Minecraft survival is to gather wood, make a pickaxe, build a tiny shelter before the first night and sleep or dig in until morning. After that, one clear goal per day keeps you from wandering. This plan works on Java and Bedrock and is written for the current 26.3 Wilderness Bound version, checked on October 10, 2026.
Key takeaways
- A Minecraft day lasts 20 minutes in real time. Night starts about 10 minutes 50 seconds in, so your first day is short.
- Craft a crafting table and a wooden pickaxe first. Do not craft the other wooden tools.
- Build a base 50 to 100 blocks away from a village so monsters do not gather there.
- Iron is common around Y 16. Diamonds are most common at Y -58 and -59, deep underground.
- Death drops your items where you died. Go back quickly to collect them.
Know the clock before you start
A full day-night cycle is 20 minutes. Night begins around 10 minutes 50 seconds into the day and lasts about 8 minutes 20 seconds. Hostile mobs can start to spawn outdoors shortly before night begins, in the dark and in caves at any time. A bed becomes usable a little before night and lets you skip to dawn when you sleep. In multiplayer, every online player must be in bed at the same time for the skip.
Version 26.3 adds Straw Beds. These single-use beds let you sleep without setting your spawn point, which is handy on trips. You can read about them in our Wilderness Bound guide.
The 10-day plan
| Day | Goal | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Survive the first night | Punch trees for about four logs, make planks, sticks, a crafting table and a wooden pickaxe. Mine stone, make a stone pickaxe and a sword. Dig into a hillside and block the entrance before dark. |
| 2 | Food and sheep | Hunt animals. Cook meat in a furnace. Kill 3 sheep for wool, then craft a bed. |
| 3 | Coal and a proper house | Find coal for torches. Build a small house with a door and light it inside and out. |
| 4 | Storage and smelting | Craft chests and a furnace. Sort your items. |
| 5 | First mine | Dig a staircase down, not straight down. Collect iron, stone and coal. |
| 6 | Iron gear | Smelt iron. Craft an iron pickaxe, then iron armor if you have enough. |
| 7 | Farm | Plant wheat near water. Fence it. Craft a bucket from iron. |
| 8 | Explore | Look for a village, a ruin or an Abandoned Camp. Bring food and a bed. Write down coordinates. |
| 9 | Deep mining | Go below Y 0 carefully, with water and a bucket for lava. |
| 10 | Prepare for the next goal | Craft armor and a shield. Decide: enchanting, a Nether trip or a bigger base. |
Day 1 in detail
- Collect about four logs. Break each tree trunk from the bottom up, and do not leave floating logs.
- Turn logs into planks, then into sticks and a crafting table. Most recipes need the 3 by 3 crafting grid.
- Make a wooden pickaxe. Skip the other wooden tools, because stone replaces them in minutes.
- Mine cobblestone, then craft a stone pickaxe, stone sword and furnace.
- Before dark, dig into a hillside, place torches and block the entrance with stone. Dig down only if you know what is below you.
- Sleep if you crafted a bed. If not, mine a little inside your hole and wait for dawn.
Food, health and safety rules
You start with 20 health points (10 hearts) and a hunger bar. Eat to regenerate health and keep sprinting. Cooked meat is better than raw. Keep a few pieces in your hotbar.
- Light up your base. Torches stop monsters from spawning on lit blocks.
- Hear a hiss? A creeper is near. Back away and hit it from range, or fight with a shield.
- Do not hit villagers or iron golems. Golems turn hostile if you attack them.
- Swamps: light the area and sleep early. Snowy groves: wear leather armor so you do not freeze, and leather boots so you do not sink in powder snow.
- Deserts have little food. Move on or find a village.
Mining the smart way
Since the world height update, ores are spread by depth. Iron needs a stone pickaxe or better. It is most common around Y 16, and a large batch is also high in mountains. Diamond ore generates from Y 16 down to Y -63 and is most common as deepslate diamond at Y -58 and -59. Bedrock Edition uses the same ranges as Java. You need an iron pickaxe or better for diamonds.
- Dig a 1 by 2 staircase down at an angle so you can walk back out.
- Place torches on one wall so you always know the way back.
- Never dig straight down. Never dig straight up under gravel or sand.
- Carry a water bucket. Lava appears often below Y 0, and water cools it.
- Stop to eat when your hunger bar drops.
What to do if you die
When you die, items drop at the spot where you died and you respawn at the world spawn or your bed. Run back to the drop fast, because items disappear after a few minutes. On Java you can turn on the keep inventory game rule when you create a world, which many new players prefer. Always set a bed as your respawn point near your base.
Common beginner mistakes
- Wandering far at night without a bed or torches.
- Building right next to a village, which attracts monsters there at night.
- Putting all items in one chest and losing track. Label chests with signs.
- Playing on public servers before learning the basics. Start in a single-player world or a private Realm. See our Realms guide.
- Playing on a PC below the minimum. Check the system requirements.
