RE2 vs RE3 vs RE4 remakes: which should you play first?

Three of Capcom's best-loved games got modern remakes, and all three are great entry points. Here is how they compare using release dates, Steam list prices and Capcom's sales data, plus news about the Nintendo Switch 2 ports.

Key takeaways

• RE2 remake: released January 24, 2019. RE3 remake: April 2, 2020. RE4 remake: March 23, 2023.
• Switch 2 native versions of all three launch on October 16, 2026.
• Sales by June 30, 2026: RE2 19.7M, RE4 16.0M, RE3 14.5M.
• Steam list prices: RE2 and RE3 $39.99, RE4 $39.99 (Gold $49.99).

At a glance

Steam showed deep sale prices for RE2 and RE3 when we checked, so use the list prices above only as a guide.

The Switch 2 ports

Nintendo Life reports that the RE2 Deluxe Edition, RE3 and RE4 Gold Edition arrive natively on Switch 2 on October 16, 2026. The UK prices are £34.99, £24.99 and £44.99. RE2 and RE3 were previously cloud-only on the original Switch, and RE4 is on a Nintendo console for the first time.

Which one first?

• RE2 remake: the best sampler of classic survival horror, with a police station and tight resource pressure.
• RE3 remake: shorter and faster paced, a good weekend game.
• RE4 remake: more action and the most modern feel. The Gold Edition adds the Separate Ways campaign.

This is our suggestion and a matter of taste. See also the order to play guide.
