MC

Minecraft is a creative game, and the base game has mild cartoon fighting. The risks come from online features: chat, public servers, purchases and downloaded mods. This guide is based on Minecraft.net and the ESRB, checked on October 9, 2026. Rules can change, so check the settings yourself.

Key takeaways

  • Ratings: ESRB Everyone 10+ (Fantasy Violence, Users Interact, In-Game Purchases) and PEGI 7.
  • Child accounts are for under 16 in the US and EU. Multiplayer is off by default until a parent turns it on.
  • Community servers are not moderated by Mojang. Realms are private and you approve each player.
  • Only download mods from trusted sites. Fake mods are a known way to spread malware.

Set up a child account

  1. All versions need a Microsoft account. Create one for your child and link it to your own adult account.
  2. Sign in at the Xbox account settings page as the parent and pick your child.
  3. On the Online Safety tab, choose whether they can join multiplayer games, create clubs and add friends.
  4. On the Privacy tab, set who can contact them by voice, text or invites: Everyone, Friends or Block.

Only parent accounts can change these settings. Switch and PlayStation 5 also have their own console controls. Player safety tools need Minecraft 1.16.4 or newer.

Chat and servers

The PC version has no built-in voice chat, but kids may use apps like Discord. Xbox and PlayStation versions have in-game voice chat. Players can mute, block and report others. On Java, open the pause menu and choose Player Reporting.

Spending

Marketplace items are bought with Minecoins, and child accounts need parent approval for purchases. Anyone offering free Minecoins for your login is a scammer. Staff and moderators never ask for passwords or personal details.

Mods and downloads

Java supports mods; Bedrock content is curated through the Marketplace. Security researchers have found malware disguised as mods, including infostealers. Safer habits:

  • Use well-known mod sites such as Modrinth or CurseForge, not random links in video descriptions.
  • Mods are normally .jar or archive files. Be suspicious of .exe or .bat installers.
  • Scan files, and use a non-administrator account.
  • If something seems wrong, delete the file, run a full scan, reinstall from Minecraft.net and change passwords.
