As of October 14, 2026, Rockstar has not announced an online mode, an online release date or crossplay for GTA VI. The game is presented as a single-player story about Jason and Lucia, and Take-Two expects to keep supporting GTA Online on current platforms. Below is what is on record, what is only a rumor, and how to tell the difference.
Key takeaways
- Rockstar has not announced any multiplayer or online mode for GTA VI, and so has no online release date.
- The June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement and store pages call GTA VI a single-player experience, as reported.
- Take-Two's CEO said the company expects to keep supporting GTA Online, which is the GTA V mode.
- Crossplay and cross-progression are not announced. See our crossplay guide.
- Claims such as "GTA 6 Online launches in December" are rumors.
What is official
Rockstar's GTA VI page talks about the story: Jason and Lucia, Vice City and a criminal conspiracy that spans Leonida. Its support page covers editions, bonuses and dates. Neither mentions an online mode. When pre-orders opened on June 24, 2026, the press release and store pages, as reported by TheSixthAxis and The Ringer, described the game as a single-player experience. The PlayStation Store page we checked today still says so and lists one player. That wording tells us what the game is at launch. It does not say what Rockstar might add later.
Is there a GTA 6 Online release date?
No. Rockstar has not given a date, a name or a window for any online mode. Everything you see about "GTA 6 Online release date" comes from guesses and leaks.
| Claim | Source type | Status |
|---|---|---|
| No online mode at launch | Store listings and press reading of the June 24 announcement | Consistent with official wording |
| Online mode will exist later | Press expectation based on GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 | Expectation, not announced |
| Online arrives within a month of launch | Single leaker post on X, April 8, 2026, no proof | Rumor, unconfirmed |
| Online arrives around December 2026 | A Gfinity writer's own prediction | Prediction, not a fact |
| Online comes in 2027 | Fan talk | Speculation |
The precedent argument goes like this. GTA Online arrived about two weeks after GTA V in 2013, and Red Dead Online's beta came about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2. Some writers use that to guess a December window. Precedent is not a plan, and Rockstar changes its approach between games.
Will GTA 6 have crossplay?
Not announced. Because there is no announced online mode, there is nothing yet to be cross-platform. GTA Online has never allowed crossplay between PlayStation and Xbox, according to a community-verified tracker, and progress does not move between the two families. Many fans expect similar rules, but that is a guess and not a Rockstar statement. Any claim that "crossplay is confirmed" is false for now. Read the full breakdown in our crossplay and cross-progression guide.
What Take-Two said about GTA Online
On the August 2026 earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick said GTA Online has been stable, that the company puts major resources into it and that it expects to support it going forward. Earlier in the year he said he had every reason to believe it would continue after GTA VI arrives. This is about the current game, GTA V, not a new online mode. If you play GTA Online today, nothing here says it will end on November 19.
The GTA+ clue
Rockstar's support page says digital pre-orders of the Standard or Ultimate Edition made before November 20, 2026 include one month of GTA+. GTA+ is the paid membership for GTA Online. The PlayStation page adds that you must claim it by March 31, 2027, and that it renews as a paid plan afterward unless you cancel. Some fans read this as a hint about the future. It is a bonus for the current online game, and Rockstar has not tied it to a GTA VI mode.

What the character switching tells us
The Extended Look showed one button that swaps between Lucia and Jason. Some viewers asked if that means two-player co-op. Nothing in Rockstar's material says so. It reads as a single-player tool: you control one hero, and the game controls the other.
How to follow official news
- Check Rockstar's GTA VI page and Newswire. Big reveals appear there first.
- Check the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store tags. They change when an online mode is added.
- Read Take-Two's earnings calls. A plan for online would most likely appear there, if at all.
- Ignore videos with red arrows and fake countdowns.
What this means for roleplay fans
Roleplay servers run on GTA V through FiveM, which is separate from Rockstar's own online mode. A PC version of GTA VI has not been announced either. Our roleplay comparison explains the gap.
Notes for parents
GTA VI is rated M (Mature 17+) by the ESRB. A future online mode would add chat with strangers, so wait for details and read our parents guide.
Common mistakes
- Paying for a "pre-load" or "invite" from a stranger.
- Treating the single-player label as a promise that online will never come.
- Treating an X post or fan prediction as an official date.
