Cyberpunk 2077 went from one of the most troubled launches in gaming to a game that has sold over 40 million copies. The big turning points were patch 1.6 in 2022, the huge Update 2.0 in September 2023 and a run of smaller updates through 2025. This guide walks through the patch history, what changed in plain words, and what we could not confirm as of October 10, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Launch: December 10, 2020. It was buggy on PS4 and Xbox One, and Sony removed it from the PlayStation Store from December 2020 to June 2021, according to Wikipedia.
  • Update 2.0 came in September 2023 and redesigned skills, cyberware, police and vehicles.
  • The newest patch we could find is 2.31 from September 11, 2025.
  • CD PROJEKT reports over 40 million copies sold, with Phantom Liberty at 15 million.
  • If you skipped the game at launch, today's version plays very differently.

Launch vs now

At launch in 2020, the PS4 and Xbox One versions had serious bugs and performance problems. The developer fixed many of them over time, but the biggest shift came with Update 2.0. According to GGRecon, it redesigned the skill trees, made cyberware grant armor, removed stat bonuses from clothing so players can dress freely, overhauled the police and MaxTac, and added vehicle combat.

The sales story

Wikipedia and CD PROJEKT list these milestones: over 13 million in December 2020, 20 million in September 2022, 25 million in October 2023, 30 million in November 2024, 35 million in November 2025 and over 40 million in the first half of 2026. CD PROJEKT's report says Phantom Liberty sold 15 million copies in under three years. Steam showed "Very Positive" across all languages when we checked, with more than 800,000 reviews. Wikipedia noted "Overwhelmingly Positive" in January 2025, so the label moves over time.

Phantom Liberty and the level cap

Phantom Liberty is the paid expansion that arrived alongside Update 2.0. It adds the Dogtown area, a sixth attribute called Relic with its own perk tree, and raises the level cap from 50 to 60, according to RPG Site. The free 2.0 update and the paid expansion are separate things, which is why some players on the base game still got the new skill system. If you own only the base game, you get the 2.0 changes but not Dogtown or Relic.

How to read patch numbers

The first number (2) marks the major generation. A second number such as .3 usually marks a content or feature update, and a third digit such as the 1 in 2.31 usually marks a smaller fix. That pattern is a convention, not a rule, so judge each patch by its notes. A few practical habits help:

  1. Update through your store or console as normal. Do not install files from random websites.
  2. Read the official patch notes when a big update arrives. They list new features and known problems.
  3. If a patch breaks something, check the official forums and wait for a hotfix before reinstalling.
  4. Remember that platforms can receive patches on different days.

Is it worth playing now?

That is a judgment, but a few facts help. The game runs on more platforms than ever, the biggest systems were rebuilt, and Steam's user score is positive. Our platforms and requirements guide covers specs and editions, and the beginner guide covers the first hours.

What we could not confirm

CD PROJEKT's news page showed Patch 2.31 as the newest patch, with the latest items dated December 2025. We did not find a patch after 2.31, but the studio may have released smaller fixes that we missed. If you want to be sure, open the game launcher or the official patch notes. We also did not check fan-made mods, because they change the game in ways the developer does not support.

Common mistakes

  • Judging the game by 2020 videos. Most of those problems were on old consoles and have been addressed.
  • Assuming a patch number tells you everything. Version numbers differ by platform, so read the notes for your own.
  • Skipping Phantom Liberty. It is a separate purchase unless you buy the Ultimate Edition.
