TF2

Community servers turn Team Fortress 2 into many different games: a boss fight (Versus Saxton Hale), a rocket-reflecting duel (Dodgeball), 1v1 practice (MGE), sliding maps (surf) and prison roleplay (Jailbreak). To play any of them, open the Community tab, type a keyword from the map name, and connect. Mode details were checked on October 14, 2026 against the official wiki.

Key takeaways

  • Each mode has its own map prefix or name, which makes searching easy.
  • Rules differ by server, so read the name, tags and chat.
  • Versus Saxton Hale is one player against everyone else, and Valve matchmaking support was added in July 2023.
  • MGE is for aim practice, Dodgeball is for airblast timing, surf is a movement game.
  • All of it is free. Beware of any server that asks you for items or links.

Map name conventions here come from community practice and the wiki; a few servers use different names, so filter by the server name too.

Versus Saxton Hale

One random player becomes Saxton Hale, usually on BLU. Everyone else plays as mercenaries, usually on RED, and tries to kill him. According to the wiki, players have one life, those who join mid-round wait for the next round, and a four-minute timer unlocks a middle control point. Hale's health scales with how many mercenaries there are, and he has moves such as a charging jump and a slam. Mercenaries can climb walls and get bonuses when few of them are left.

Dodgeball

Everyone plays Pyro, and rockets (and sometimes slower, bigger nukes) fly between the teams. You airblast (reflect) the projectile, which speeds up each time. If you miss, you get hit. Maps use the tfdb_ prefix. Some servers allow only the Flamethrower, and many servers dislike stealing rockets aimed at teammates.

  • Airblast just before impact; too early may not register.
  • Stay away from teammates so one mistake does not hurt two people.
  • Watch behind you, since rockets can come from the sides.

MGE

MGE is a SourceMod plugin that sets up small arenas for duels. Two players fight, a third waits in the queue, and the loser swaps out. According to the wiki, the first to 20 points wins in a normal arena. In chat you type !add to join an arena and !remove to leave. Most servers allow Soldier, Demoman, Scout and Sniper, and some use an Elo rating that starts at 1,600. The command !handicap lowers your health so a duel against a better player is fairer.

Surf

Surf maps are made of angled ramps. You slide down them while steering with your mouse and keys, jumping between sections to reach the end. We could not find an official wiki page on surf, so this summary is based on how community servers describe it. Beginner-friendly servers exist, and stages that need bunny-hopping can feel inconsistent, according to one community post. Start on easy maps and use the server chat command to list other servers if the list offers it.

Jailbreak, Deathrun and other modes

Jailbreak is a prison roleplay mode based on a Counter-Strike idea. Prisoners (RED) start in cells with only melee weapons, guards (BLU) have full weapons, and a Warden can give orders and start minigames. Deathrun is described by the wiki as a Jailbreak minigame where runners cross a hallway of traps that other players trigger. Randomizer and trading servers also exist; Oggo lists both as modes.

How to find and join each mode

  1. Open Play, Find a Game, Community, then press Quick refresh.
  2. Type the search word from the table in the map box.
  3. Sort by players. Pick a server near you with good ping.
  4. Press Connect and read the rules in chat.

You can also use Oggo's TF2 server list. Step-by-step joining and fixes are in the community server guide. Community quickplay sites list servers by mode, with region filters and Steam join links.

Common mistakes and parents note

  • Joining an empty server and thinking the mode is dead.
  • Ignoring the rules: no stealing in Dodgeball, no camping the spawn in VSH.
  • Forgetting that community servers choose their own chat rules.

TF2 is rated ESRB M (Mature 17+) for blood and gore and intense violence, and online interaction is not rated. Jailbreak and similar modes involve text and voice chat with strangers, so parents should check privacy settings and mute options.
