League of Legends is a free 5v5 team game from Riot Games. You pick a champion, join four teammates and try to destroy the enemy Nexus before they destroy yours. If you are new, the fastest way to improve is to learn the map, pick one simple champion and focus on gold and experience. This guide uses Riot's own how-to-play page and checks on October 10, 2026. Details can change with patches.
Key takeaways
- The goal is to destroy the enemy Nexus. Each team has five players.
- The five roles are Top, Jungle, Mid, Bot and Support.
- You get stronger from experience (levels) and gold (items). Both come from kills, assists, minions and objectives.
- Every champion has a passive and Q, W, E, R abilities, plus two summoner spells on D and F.
- The game is free. Optional purchases are cosmetic, such as skins.
- Muting a rude player takes seconds and is always allowed.
The map and the goal
The main mode is Summoner's Rift. The map has three lanes (top, middle and bottom) and a jungle between them. Each lane has three turrets and one inhibitor. Each Nexus is guarded by two more turrets. To win, your team must clear at least one lane and then take down the Nexus. Minions spawn from each Nexus and walk down the lanes. They are your cover: if you push forward with minions in front of you, enemy turrets hit them instead of you.
Behind your Nexus is the Fountain. Here you heal, restore mana and open the shop. Use the recall key (B) to teleport back when you are low on health or have enough gold to buy something. A match often lasts 20 to 40 minutes, but it can be shorter or much longer.
The five roles
| Role | Where you play | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Top lane | Tough solo fighter. You hold the lane and often protect your team in fights. |
| Jungle | Between the lanes | Kill neutral monsters for gold and help lanes with surprise attacks (ganks). |
| Mid | Middle lane | Often a champion with strong burst damage. You can roam to help other lanes. |
| Bot | Bottom lane | Usually the main damage dealer of the team, paired with a Support. |
| Support | Bottom lane | Protects teammates, places vision and starts or breaks fights. |
Riot suggests trying all five lanes at first, or sticking to one once you know what you like. Neither is wrong. Your best role is the one you enjoy and play often.
Levels, gold and items
You earn experience by killing enemy minions and champions, by assists and by destroying structures. Each level makes your abilities stronger and raises your stats. You earn gold in similar ways and spend it in the shop. You can carry up to seven items. Items grow stronger as the game goes on, so a team that earns more gold usually wins fights later.
The easiest way to get gold is last-hitting: landing the final blow on an enemy minion. Practice this in a custom game against no one. If you cannot last-hit well yet, do not worry. Even a few extra minions per wave adds up to a full item by the middle of the game.
Objectives that win games
Besides turrets, the jungle holds two big monsters. Drakes give your whole team a lasting buff when you kill them. Baron Nashor is the strongest monster. The team that slays it gets extra attack damage and ability power, a stronger recall and stronger minions nearby. Beginners should learn to watch the timers on these objectives, and to ask: "Is my team alive and together?" before trying them.
Abilities and summoner spells
Every champion has five core abilities: a passive, three basic abilities (Q, W, E) and an ultimate (R). You choose which ability to level when you gain a point. Most players level the ultimate whenever it becomes available. You also pick two summoner spells, mapped to D and F. Common ones are Flash (a short jump), Teleport, Smite for junglers and Ignite. New accounts unlock Ghost and Heal at level 1, and more as you level up.
Your first week: a simple plan
- Check your computer with our system requirements guide, then install the game from the official site.
- Take Riot's champion quiz or choose a free starter champion. Simple champions with few moving parts are best.
- Play the tutorial, then a few matches against bots to learn the buttons and where the items are.
- Use the practice tool to learn each ability's range and cooldown.
- Pick one or two champions and play them for several matches. Do not switch every game.
- After each match, think of one thing that went wrong, such as dying while low or missing minions, and work on only that.
Common beginner mistakes
- Chasing kills too far. Walking into the dark side of the map can lead to a quick death.
- Ignoring the shop. Recall when you have gold. Holding 2,000 unspent gold is wasted power.
- Fighting alone against objectives. Wait for teammates before Baron or a Drake.
- Arguing in chat. It helps nobody. Mute and keep playing.
- Playing too many champions. Mastery of a few is worth more than a shallow list.
