The Witcher 3 is a third-person open-world action RPG. You play Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter searching for his adopted daughter Ciri, who is pursued by the Wild Hunt. The world is inspired by Slavic folklore. Here are the beginner basics, based on Wikipedia and the Remastered announcements.
Key takeaways
- Geralt uses steel and silver swords, a crossbow, bombs and five Signs.
- Skill trees, alchemy, Gwent, horse racing and boxing are all part of the game.
- The Remastered edition reworked the skill tree: three ranks per skill, prerequisites and a point reset.
- Free DLC includes New Game Plus.
Combat basics
- Steel sword: for humans and animals.
- Silver sword: for monsters.
- Signs: five magic effects Geralt can cast.
- Bombs and crossbow: useful tools for specific fights.
- Alchemy: potions and oils prepare you for a hunt.
The Remastered skill tree
CD PROJEKT RED reworked the skill tree for the Remastered edition. Each skill now has three ranks and prerequisites, and your skill points were reset. This means you should plan a build before you spend. Reforging items now changes their appearance only.
Five beginner tips
- Check what you are fighting, then choose the right sword.
- Prepare potions and oils before a hunt.
- Do not start the DLCs too early; see our DLC guide.
- Try Gwent. It is a fun side game.
- Use the Bard's Ballad accessibility preset if you want an easier ride.
