Searches for the first Silent Hill game and its remake keep climbing, and the questions are practical: is there a release date, can you play it on PC or PS5, how long is it, and do you need it before Silent Hill 2? Silent Hill 1 remake: what is confirmed
Konami announced a remake of the original game at its Press Start showcase in June 2025, with Bloober Team, the studio behind the Silent Hill 2 remake, as developer. The reveal was a short trailer that used music from the first game. Bloober Team later said at an investor Q&A that the remake was in full production.

Is it coming in 2027 on PS5?
A gaming blogger known as TCMFGames claimed in April 2026 that the remake would arrive no earlier than 2027 on PlayStation 5. Outlets that repeated it, including GameGPU, called it a leak from an insider and not an official statement. Konami has not confirmed it. Treat 2027 as a rumor, and treat any other date you see in search results the same way until Konami speaks.
The original 1999 game: what to know
The first Silent Hill was made by Team Silent inside Konami and came out on the original PlayStation: February 23, 1999 in North America, March 4 in Japan and July 16 in Europe. You play Harry Mason, who searches for his missing adopted daughter Cheryl in the fictional town of Silent Hill. That is all the story we will say here, since the mystery is the point.
The game has five endings depending on what you do: Bad, Bad+, Good, Good+ and a joke ending often called the UFO ending. Length depends on how thoroughly you explore, so we will not quote a number we could not verify.
Can you play Silent Hill 1 today?
There is no official modern version of the first game. According to Wikipedia, it came back on the PlayStation Network for PS3 and PSP in 2009 (North America) and 2011 (Europe), and it also appeared in a Japanese Complete Set in 2006. Availability on those stores today is not something we can promise, so check the store on your own console. A fan-made PC port appeared on GitHub in June 2026. It is not an official release, and we do not link to it, to emulators or to game files from unofficial sources, which are often unsafe.
Do you need to play Silent Hill 1 before Silent Hill 2?
No. Silent Hill 2, released in 2001, is a separate story with a new main character, and the modern entries are standalone as well. Our own suggestion, which is an opinion, is to start with a modern game and go back to the 1999 original only if you get curious. What about the movie?
The 2006 film Silent Hill, directed by Christophe Gans, is loosely based on the first game and also borrows from Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4. It replaces Harry with a female lead named Rose Da Silva. Critics were mostly negative, but it was a financial success. A newer film, Return to Silent Hill, is loosely based on Silent Hill 2 and opened in the US on January 23, 2026.
