Rockstar has not announced any official modding support for GTA VI, and no PC version has been announced either. The "GTA 6 modding restrictions" headlines come from Rockstar's Mod Guidelines, which apply to its games in general. We checked this on October 14, 2026, mostly through press reports, because Rockstar's own pages were hard to open. Below, we mark what is official, what is reported and what is rumor.
Key takeaways
- GTA VI is confirmed only for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Consoles do not support the kind of mods PC players use.
- Rockstar published Mod Guidelines in September 2026. Reports say they cover all Rockstar games, and none we read says they were written for GTA VI.
- Single-player, free, non-commercial mods on PC have been tolerated since 2017. Online mods and cheating are not.
- Roleplay servers run through Rockstar's own Cfx.re platform (FiveM and RedM), which Rockstar bought in 2023.
- Mod downloads are a common way to spread malware. Stick to trusted sources.
What is known for GTA VI today
| Question | Answer as of Oct 14, 2026 | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | Official |
| PC version | Not announced; a Q1 2027 report exists | Rumor |

| Mods on consoles | Not offered | How consoles work |
| Rockstar Mod Guidelines | Exist; cover Rockstar games in general | Reported by several outlets |
Forbes said on October 13 that Rockstar has not given a PC date and that mod support is not confirmed. Take-Two's CEO has said that its games eventually reach more platforms, but he gave no date. A PC release in early 2027 is a rumor passed along by outlets. Read our PC release guide for the detail.
What the "restrictions" are about
Several outlets reported on the Mod Guidelines between September 20 and 22, 2026. GTA Intel says the document is dated September 10 and that Rockstar also reissued the license for FiveM and RedM. Search interest in "modding restrictions" seems to follow that coverage, but we cannot prove what caused the spike. The reports describe these limits:
- Extending the official story. Projects that continue the missions, characters or maps of a Rockstar game, such as fan-made story chapters.
- Mixing games. Moving Rockstar content from one game to another.
- Unofficial ports. Running a game on hardware Rockstar did not release for.
- Selling mods. Paid mods only through storefronts Rockstar approves. The Cfx Marketplace, which launched in January 2026, is the one named.
- Online mods and cheating. Mods for GTA Online and tools that harm other players' games are not allowed.
The reports agree that the guidelines are not a blanket ban on mods. Free single-player mods that stay out of those areas appear to fall outside the restrictions. Dork notes that Rockstar has not explained how it will enforce them. Because we could not read the guidelines page ourselves, treat the list above as reported, and read Rockstar's own page before you publish a mod.
Rockstar's history with mods
- 2015. Take-Two sent a cease-and-desist to FiveM, according to press timelines. FiveM kept growing.
- June 2017. Take-Two's lawyers blocked OpenIV, a GTA V mod tool. After fan protests, Rockstar said Take-Two would not act against single-player, non-commercial PC mods that respect others' IP. Online services and tools that affect them were excluded.
- August 2023. Rockstar announced that Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, is now part of Rockstar. Terms were not shared. Press has guessed a price of about $20 million, which is not official.
- January 2026. The Cfx Marketplace opened as an official place to sell creator content, per GTA Intel and GTABoom.
- September 2026. The Mod Guidelines coverage described above.
Take-Two's CEO told Business Insider in May 2026 that the company chose to join the roleplay crowd rather than fight it. We read that as relayed by GTABoom. It shows a change of tone, but it is not a promise about GTA VI.
What this means for players
Single-player
If a PC version arrives, expect mods to be a topic again. Nothing is announced, so nobody can say which mods will work or be allowed. On console, you play the game as released.
Online
Rockstar has not described a GTA VI online mode or its rules. In GTA V, Rockstar says players can turn off its anti-cheat only in Story Mode. Using mods in online play can lead to account bans, which has been the long-time rule. Do not assume GTA VI will be different.
Mod downloads and malware
- Do not download files that claim to be for GTA VI. See our fake downloads guide and the leaks safety guide.
- Prefer mods from known sites with many reviews. Scan files, and never run unknown ".exe" installers.
- Do not share your Rockstar or platform password with a mod site.
- If you are a teen, ask a parent or guardian before installing anything.
The roleplay link: /servers and /redm
FiveM and RedM are the mod platforms behind GTA and Red Dead roleplay. They run on PC and are officially part of Rockstar now. Our GTA RP server list and RedM list show live servers. No FiveM-style platform has been announced for GTA VI, so these servers are for GTA V and RDR2. Some outlets say official roleplay in GTA VI is likely, but that is a guess from the acquisition, not a Rockstar statement. See also GTA 6 and the roleplay communities and the RedM rules guide. A rumored in-house Rockstar tool called "Project ROME" is unconfirmed.
Common mistakes
- Reading "restrictions" as "mods are banned for GTA VI". That is not what we found.
- Believing a "GTA 6 PC mod menu" video. No PC game exists yet.
- Assuming a server's rules are Rockstar's rules. Each server also has its own.
