When FiveM sits on a loading screen, the quickest way to save time is to decide who is at fault. Start with the cheap checks below and only then touch your files. Checked October 31, 2026.
Key takeaways
- If only one server fails and others load, the problem is almost certainly that server.
- If every server hangs, check the FiveM service status, then your cache, antivirus and firewall.
- The first join on a large roleplay server can take several minutes because resources download, so wait before you assume it is broken.
1. Compare servers
Try two or three other servers, ideally a small one. If one works, the broken server may be restarting, full, whitelist-only or running a heavy resource. Ask in that server's Discord. The FiveM documentation says that if a crash happens only on one server, you should join the official FiveM test server to compare, and contact the owners of the server where it fails.
2. Check the service status
Sometimes the FiveM service itself has trouble, and then nothing you do on your PC will help. Open our FiveM status page, which combines the official status link with our own checks of player counts, and compare the number of players with the usual level. A sudden drop across many servers points to the service, not to you.
3. Wait for the first download
On your first join a server sends its resources to your PC. Big servers can send several gigabytes. A progress bar that moves slowly is working. A bar that does not move for many minutes is not.
4. Clear the cache
Corrupt cache files are a common cause. Follow our guide on clearing the FiveM cache, and keep the cache/game folder. Restart your PC afterwards.
5. Antivirus and firewall
The docs say aggressive antivirus settings often cause the stuck screen 'Starting FiveM, we're getting there', and some vendors block FiveM entirely. Add FiveM to the exclusions of your security program, or test with it paused for a minute, and allow FiveM through the Windows firewall. Do not leave protection off.
6. Splash screen problems
For a rotating splash screen the docs say to delete %appdata%\citizenfx\ros_id.dat and %localappdata%\digitalentitlements. For an error about a component file, delete caches.xml from the FiveM application data folder.
7. Check your GTA V files
Verify the integrity of your GTA V files in Steam, Epic or the Rockstar Launcher, and make sure GTA V is updated. FiveM needs a legitimate, current copy.
Understand the join process first
Joining a FiveM server is not one step but five, and knowing which one is stuck tells you where to look. The table shows the phases in plain language. The loading bar you see covers several of them, which is why "stuck on connecting" is a vague complaint.
Server-side causes (not your fault)
If other servers work, the problem is likely on the server's side. Common reasons include:
- The server is restarting. Many roleplay servers restart on a schedule, and the server list can show it as online while it starts up. Wait a few minutes.
- The server is full or has a queue. A queue is normal on busy servers. Waiting is the only fix.
- Whitelist or application required. Many serious roleplay communities require approval in their Discord before you can join. The error can look like a connection failure, so read the server description.
- A heavy or broken resource. A script that fails to load can leave all players stuck at the loading screen. Staff usually post in Discord when that happens.
- A very large first download. Big roleplay servers send gigabytes of custom content the first time you join.
To check whether a server is alive and how many people are in it, use our GTA RP server list, which shows live player counts. A server with zero players and a full status is a sign that it is down or restarting.
Your PC and network: the usual suspects
If every server hangs, the cause is local or at the FiveM service. Work through these in order:
- Restart FiveM and your PC. It sounds basic, but it clears locked files and stuck processes.
- Check the service. Our FiveM status page shows a combined view of the official link and our own player-count checks.
- Turn off a VPN or proxy for a test. They add delay and can break the handshake.
- Allow FiveM through the firewall on private and public networks.
- Add a security software exclusion for the FiveM folder if the docs' antivirus advice applies.
- Clear the safe cache folders. See our cache and uninstall guide.
- Update your graphics driver and Windows.
- Verify GTA V in Steam, Epic or the Rockstar Launcher.
Reading the console
Press F8 in FiveM to open the console. It prints what the client is doing, including connection steps and errors. When you ask for help, include the last lines of the console and the exact error text. A screenshot is better than "it doesn't work", because helpers can then see whether the client failed to reach the server, failed to download a resource or crashed in a script. The console also allows you to use the connect command with an address, which is useful to bypass the server list when you have an IP and port from the server's Discord. The default port of a FiveM server is 30120.
Specific symptoms
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Starting FiveM, we're getting there" forever | Security software | Check exclusions; contact support if needed |
| Rotating splash screen | Leftover auth data | Delete the ros_id.dat file and the digitalentitlements folder named in the docs |
| Stuck on a server's loading screen | Server resource or slow download | Wait, then try another server |
| Disconnects after a few minutes | Network drops or server crash | Test your connection, try a wired link |
| "Could not find game executable" | Wrong GTA V path | Point FiveM to your GTA V folder |
| Crashes right after joining | Server-specific or local crash | Compare on the official test server |
How to compare with the official test server
The FiveM documentation suggests joining the official FiveM test server to find out whether a crash is specific to one server. If the test server works, contact the owners of the server that fails, because the fault is likely in their setup. If the test server also fails, the problem is on your PC and you should continue with the local fixes above.
How to ask for help in a way that gets an answer
- State your Windows version and GPU.
- Name the server, or say that it happens on every server.
- List what you already tried, such as cache clearing and VPN off.
- Paste the exact error text and the last lines of the F8 console.
- Use the official forum or the server's Discord, and do not download a "fix" from a stranger.
Prevention
Keep the drive that holds FiveM clear of clutter, update drivers regularly and avoid piling on graphics mods. Join a small server after an update to let the cache refresh before heading to a busy city. Keep two or three alternative servers in your list so a server restart does not end your session. And remember that on a busy evening a connection can take longer simply because many players are joining at once.
Network deep dive: when the line is the problem
FiveM joins are sensitive to unstable connections, because the client downloads resources and then keeps a live link to the server. If your connection is fine for video but joins fail, run a few simple tests.
- Use a cable. Wi-Fi drops packets in a way that streaming hides but games do not. A wired connection removes a whole class of random disconnects.
- Check packet loss and ping. Open the Command Prompt and run
ping 1.1.1.1 -n 30. Any lost packets or jumps in time show an unstable line. Contact your provider if loss appears regularly. - Try a different DNS server. Public DNS services such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 sometimes resolve game addresses faster than a provider's server. Change it in your network adapter settings and reconnect.
- Pause heavy downloads. Cloud backups, game updates and streams on the same network can starve the FiveM download.
- Test on another network. A phone hotspot is a quick way to find out whether your home network or provider is the culprit. If FiveM works on the hotspot, the problem is your router, your provider or a setting on your network.
After an update: why it breaks and what helps
A new FiveM or GTA V update can leave old files behind. After an update, the first start rebuilds parts of the cache, which takes longer than usual. If it fails, close all FiveM processes, restart, and try again before you do anything drastic. Rockstar's launcher, Steam and Epic can also update GTA V in the background. A GTA V update may require FiveM to adjust, and the FiveM team usually handles this quickly, so a short wait is sometimes the best fix. Check the official channels before you reinstall.
Mods and overlays that cause conflicts
Overlays and injected tools can conflict with FiveM, including recording software overlays, performance monitors, RGB software and graphics tools. If FiveM started failing after you installed something new, remove or disable it for a test. Visual mods and ReShade presets are covered in our graphics guide. Keep your setup simple while you diagnose, and add things back one at a time.
If you run the server
Server owners see the same problem from the other side. A FiveM server uses port 30120 by default, over both TCP and UDP, and players cannot join if the port is not reachable from the internet. Check the firewall of your host, the router's port forwarding if you host at home, and the status in your control panel. Large loading times often come from large streamed assets, so compressing textures and removing unused resources improves the join experience. After changes, test with a fresh player account that has never joined, because the first-join download is the experience new players have. Our connection guide shows what a player sees when they connect.
When to be patient
Some waits are normal. A first join to a big roleplay server can take a long time. A server restart usually takes several minutes. An evening with many players can slow queue and loading. If the progress indicator moves, even slowly, give it time. Only when nothing moves for a long time, or an error appears, is it time to act.
A short checklist to save
- Try another server.
- Check the status page.
- Wired connection, VPN off.
- Firewall and security exclusions.
- Clear the safe cache folders.
- Update Windows and drivers.
- Verify GTA V.
- Post the exact error and console lines when asking for help.
8. Ask with details
If nothing helps, post the exact error text, your Windows version and what you already tried on the Cfx.re forum. Screenshots of the console (F8) help a lot. Never download 'fixers' from unknown sites.
