Fortnite Parental Controls and Safety Guide for Parents

Fortnite is rated ESRB T, which means teens and up, but a lot of younger children play it. The game is free, includes voice and text chat with other players, and sells items. The good news is that Epic Games offers detailed parental controls. This guide summarises them from Epic's safety pages and the ESRB.

Cabined Accounts and age settings

Epic asks for age at first login. Under 13, the account is "cabined" and a parent gets an email to grant permissions. For players under 18 who have not given an age before, chat defaults to Nobody, parties are Invite Only and personalized recommendations are off. Under 16, a mature language filter is on by default.

What parents can control

Chat and voice: Everybody, Friends and teammates, Friends Only, or Nobody. Under 10 is capped at Friends Only. Under 13 is capped at friends, teammates and connections. The profanity filter is always on under 13.
Spending: A PIN for Epic payments. There is a daily limit of $100 on Epic payments for under 13. Parents can allow or block V-Bucks on random-reward items in supported regions.
Playtime: Daily limits or time windows, separate for playing and creating, warnings at 30 minutes left, and time reports for up to four weeks.
Other: a content rating limit, blocking Creative or UEFN access, approving sign-ins, blocking AI features, and a PIN to add friends.

Set it up in five steps

Create your own Epic account and open the parental controls portal on epicgames.com.
Link your child's account.
Set a PIN that only you know.
Choose chat, spending and playtime limits.
Set up the same limits on the console or phone.

Talk to your child

Settings help, but conversation is better. Ask who they play with, explain why random chat can be risky, and agree on a rule for spending. You can also watch a match together; see the live wall on the Fortnite hub to understand what the game looks like.
