EFT

Escape from Tarkov is a first-person extraction shooter for PC. You start a raid on a map, loot, fight, and try to reach an extraction point alive. If you die, you lose the gear you brought. That risk is the whole game.

Key takeaways

  • A raid is one timed trip into a map. Survive and extract to keep your loot.
  • You can play as your PMC (your main fighter) or as a Scav (a free, low-risk character).
  • Traders sell gear and give tasks. The hideout gives you upgrades.
  • Patch 1.1 made early progression easier, so older guides may be too harsh.

The core loop

  1. Prepare in the menu: pick gear, check your stash, and heal or repair.
  2. Deploy to a map and learn your spawn.
  3. Loot, complete task goals, and avoid fights you do not need.
  4. Reach an extraction point before the raid timer ends.
  5. Sell or keep your finds, then repeat.

PMC or Scav?

Your PMC carries your best gear, so death hurts. A Scav run uses a random free loadout, so losing it costs you little. Many new players use Scav runs to learn maps and to collect loot safely.

Traders and the hideout

Traders buy your loot, sell items and hand out tasks. Tasks give experience and unlock better trader levels. The hideout is your base. Its modules give crafting and health benefits. In patch 1.1, the Found in Raid requirement was removed for basic hideout modules, which helps new players build faster.

First-hour tips

  • Learn one map well before you try others.
  • Listen first. Footsteps and shots often tell you where danger is.
  • Do not bring gear you cannot afford to lose.
  • Read each item before you sell it. Some are needed for tasks.
  • Expect to die a lot. Review why, then try again.

Is it for you?

The game is slow, tense and punishing. It has realistic gun violence and online chat with strangers, so it suits adults and older teens. Compare it with other shooters on the games page.
