Not always. Many servers start with a warning, but repeated or serious RDM can lead to a ban. Read your server’s punishment rules.

What is the new life rule?

It says that after your character dies, you forget how it happened and do not seek revenge. Details change by server.

Why is metagaming such a big deal?

It lets you act on facts your character should not know, which gives you an unfair edge and spoils scenes for others.

Many servers have an appeal process, usually on their Discord. Check their rules page for how it works.

GTA RP Rules Explained: Why Servers Ban RDM, VDM and More

Every serious GTA RP server has a rules page. New players often skim it, then get a warning in their first week. This guide explains the most common rules, the reason behind each one, and how staff usually react. If you only need word meanings, see our GTA RP terms glossary.

Key takeaways

Rules protect the story and make sure everyone gets a fair turn.
The same rule can be worded differently on each server. Always read yours.
Staff usually care about intent. A small mistake is treated differently from repeated abuse.
If unsure, ask in the server's support channel before you act.

The most common rules and why they exist

Rule	What it means	Why servers enforce it
No RDM (random deathmatch)	Killing someone with no roleplay reason or lead-up	It ends another person's scene with no story
No VDM (vehicle deathmatch)	Using a car to hit people for no reason	Same reason as RDM, and it ruins busy streets
No metagaming	Using knowledge your character could not have, such as what you saw on a stream	It breaks the idea that characters only know what they have lived
No powergaming	Forcing results on others without a chance to respond	RP works when both sides can react
No fail RP	Acting in ways that break realism	It keeps scenes believable
New life rule (NLR)	After a character dies, it forgets what led to it and does not return for revenge	It stops endless revenge loops
No combat logging	Disconnecting to dodge a bad situation	Other players lose their scene

These meanings follow common community glossaries. Details vary, so your server's wording wins.

What happens when you break a rule?

Most servers use a ladder. The exact steps differ, but you often see this:

A staff member talks to you in game or on Discord.
You get a formal warning.
A temporary ban follows for repeated or serious breaks.
A permanent ban is kept for severe or repeated abuse.

Serious rules, like combat logging or metagaming from streams, are often punished faster. Many servers offer an appeal form on Discord. Be calm and honest in it, because staff read many of them.

How to stay out of trouble

Read the rules before your first session, not after your first warning.
Start a scene with talk. A short line of dialogue is often enough to avoid RDM.
Do not use Discord or stream chat to find other players.
If you are not sure, ask staff. They prefer a question to a ban.
