Older WoW versions asked you to pick a realm. Forever works differently. Blizzard's September 21, 2026 post, as summarized by ForG, says there is no realm selection. You choose a ruleset, and every player on that ruleset shares one world. Details may still change before launch on November 4, 2026.
Key takeaways
- Four rulesets: Normal, PvP, RP and Hardcore.
- There is no realm list and you cannot move a character between rulesets.
- A PvP account can hold characters of one faction only.
- Hardcore opens some time after launch, and one death is permanent.
- Collections and Legacy points are shared across the account.
The four rulesets
| Ruleset | Factions | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Both | Questing, exploring, cooperation. PvP only when you choose it. |
| PvP | One per account | Open-world PvP in contested territory. |
| RP | Both | Roleplay and immersion. |
| Hardcore | Both | One death is permanent. Opens after launch. |
What realmless means for friends
Groups, dungeons and raids work only inside the same ruleset. Horde and Alliance cannot group together. Battlegrounds work across rulesets, except Hardcore, which stays separate. If your friends pick Normal and you pick PvP, you will not be able to run a dungeon together.
The faction lock on PvP
ForG notes that if one faction grows too large, new characters of that faction may be paused, as happened in Season of Discovery. That is a possibility, not a promise.
Moving between rulesets
You cannot transfer a character from one ruleset to another. To play on a different one you level a new character there. The one exception is Hardcore: a character that dies can move to another ruleset such as PvP. Progress made in Hardcore counts on the other rulesets. Progress from the other rulesets does not carry into Hardcore.
Account-wide progress
Collections and Legacy points are shared on all rulesets. The Icy Veins subscription page lists a limit of 50 characters per Battle.net license. Check Blizzard's launch notes for the final limits.
Language setting
Preferred Online Language is set under Esc, Options, System, Languages and Social. It applies to all characters on the account, and after a change you wait 24 hours before changing it again.
Examples: who can play together
Two friends both on Normal who pick the same faction can group, run dungeons and raid together. A Normal player and a PvP player cannot enter a dungeon as one group, even if both are Alliance. An Alliance and a Horde player on the same ruleset can meet in the world, but they cannot form a group. A Hardcore character stays in its own space for groups, and it also has its own battlegrounds.
What is still unknown
- The exact date Hardcore opens after launch.
- Final limits for characters per account and per ruleset.
- How Blizzard will handle a very large faction imbalance on PvP.
- Whether any ruleset rules change after the beta and the stress test.
Some third-party sites also describe a two-part naming system for characters. We did not find that in a Blizzard source we could open, so we do not treat it as confirmed.
Which one should you pick?
A new player who wants a relaxed first run fits Normal. Fans of roleplay have their own space. Hardcore is for people who accept losing a character for good, and it is not open at launch.
