CS2

Surf is a community mode where you slide down giant tilted ramps without ever touching the ground. There are no enemies to shoot and no rank to lose: it is you, the ramps and the timer. It looks hard at first, but a few simple ideas make it click.

Key takeaways

  • Surf is a community mode: slide down tilted ramps with no enemies and no rank.
  • Join a surf server from the CS2 community list and start with an easy map.
  • Practice air strafing: turn your mouse and hold the matching key.
  • Small, calm sessions beat frustration.

How surfing works

On a surf map, ramps are tilted at an angle. If you land on a ramp while moving sideways, you slide along it instead of stopping. Your movement keys then steer you along the ramp, and you pick up speed as you go. The goal is to keep sliding from one ramp to the next until you reach the end of the map. Surf maps have names that start with surf_.

The basic controls

  • Hold the sideways key toward the ramp you want to push into (A or D) while you slide.
  • Move your mouse smoothly in the direction you are turning. Jerky mouse movement kills your speed.
  • Don't hold forward (W) on ramps. Most surf movement uses only the sideways keys and the mouse.
  • Jump from ramp to ramp by pressing space at the right moment when the gap comes.

Choose an easy first map

Start with a map marked Tier 1 or easy on the server. Beginner maps have wide ramps and short gaps. Skip the hard ones until you can finish a few easy maps without falling.

Find a good surf server

Open the CS2 surf server list and pick a server with players online and a low ping. Playing with regulars helps: they often share tips in chat, and you can watch how they take the ramps.

Beginner mistakes to avoid

  1. Pressing W on ramps. It slows you down and breaks your slide.
  2. Moving the mouse too fast. Smooth, small movements work much better.
  3. Jumping too early. Wait until the ramp ends, then jump.
  4. Trying hard maps first. Start easy and build confidence.
  5. Playing with high ping. Join a server in your region.

Watch someone surf first

Watching a skilled surfer take a map is the best lesson: you can see how smooth their mouse is and where they jump. Open a live stream, then try the same map yourself.

Your first surf session

  1. Pick a beginner map. Look for tiers or difficulty in the server's map list.
  2. Use the restart command the server offers, so a fall costs you only a few seconds.
  3. Slow down. Speed comes from clean turns, not from holding every key.
  4. Watch someone else. Many surf servers have replays or players you can spectate.

Common problems

  • Sliding off the ramp: your mouse turn and your key do not match. Turn left with A, turn right with D.
  • Getting stuck: you may have touched the ground. Surf only works while you stay on the ramp.
  • Motion sickness: take breaks and lower your field of view if needed.
