FiveM keeps its own files in your user profile and does not install into your GTA V folder, so removing it does not remove GTA V. Before you delete anything, work out whether you need a full uninstall at all. Checked October 31, 2026.
Key takeaways
- Close FiveM and check Task Manager for FiveM.exe or CitizenFX processes before deleting files.
- Clearing the cache fixes many loading problems and keeps your settings.
- The cache/game folder holds large core GTA V assets. Keep it unless a guide tells you otherwise, or you will wait for a re-download.
Step 0: back up what you want to keep
Write down your key binds and any custom UI changes, and note your favourite servers. FiveM can forget saved favourites after a reset. Also note your FiveM version if you plan to ask for help later.
Step 1: clear the cache (try this first)
Press Windows + R, type %localappdata% and press Enter. Open FiveM, then FiveM.app, then data. A widely used hosting guide (Shockbyte) lists these items as safe to delete:
cache/browsercache/subprocessserver-cache-privnui-storage- everything inside
server-cacheexcept its game folder, if present
Keep cache/game and server-cache/game. They hold core GTA V assets of several gigabytes, and deleting them can force a long re-download or stop FiveM from launching. The first start after clearing can take a couple of minutes while the cache rebuilds, which is normal.
Step 2: reset the application data
If a specific error keeps coming back, the FiveM documentation has targeted fixes. For an error loading a component such as xyz.dll it says to delete caches.xml from the FiveM application data folder, and if that file is missing, to delete the whole application data folder and run FiveM again. For a rotating splash screen it says to delete %appdata%\citizenfx\ros_id.dat and %localappdata%\digitalentitlements. The next launch will download FiveM again, so expect a few minutes.
Step 3: a full uninstall
Close FiveM, then delete the FiveM folder inside %localappdata%, and delete the desktop and Start menu shortcuts. If you also want to remove saved settings, check %appdata%\CitizenFX. Your GTA V installation in Steam, Epic or the Rockstar Launcher stays untouched. The FiveM docs warn that deleting only the shortcut does not uninstall the program, and that you do not need the original FiveM.exe once it is installed. Launch it from the Start menu shortcut instead.
The right order: from light to heavy
Most guides jump straight to "reinstall FiveM". That is the slowest fix and it throws away settings you may want. A better approach is to escalate in small steps, because each step costs more time and risk than the one before it.
If a step fixes the problem, stop. If you must go further, write down what you changed so you can undo it. The sections below follow this order.
Before you delete anything: a five-minute safety check
- Close everything. Quit FiveM, and check Task Manager for FiveM.exe, FiveM_GTAProcess.exe or CitizenFX processes that are still running. A running process locks files, and the FiveM docs list a "Moving of xyz.exe failed (err = 32)" error that appears when a process is still open.
- Confirm what is a cache and what is a setting. Cache folders are rebuilt automatically. Settings, key binds and favourites are not.
- Free some disk space. A cleared cache re-downloads server files. If your drive is nearly full, the next join can fail for that reason alone.
- Know your GTA V launcher. FiveM needs a legitimate copy of GTA V from Steam, Epic or the Rockstar Launcher. A broken GTA V install is a different problem from a broken FiveM install.
What each error message in the FiveM docs really means
The official client issues page lists specific fixes. Reading them in plain language helps you pick the right step instead of deleting everything.
| Message | What it usually means | Fix from the docs |
|---|---|---|
| Error loading component xyz.dll | A damaged component cache | Delete caches.xml; if it is missing, delete the whole application data folder |
| Stuck on a rotating splash screen | Leftover authentication data | Delete %appdata%\citizenfx\ros_id.dat and %localappdata%\digitalentitlements |
| Starting FiveM, we're getting there | Often security software | Check antivirus settings and submit a support ticket |
| Entry Point Not Found | Leftover DLLs from other programs | Delete v8.dll, v8_libbase.dll and v8_libplatform.dll from C:\Windows\system32 if they exist |
| Error loading component adhesive.dll | Old Windows 10 version | Update Windows 10 to at least version 1703 (check with winver) |
| FiveM is already installed | Launching the installer again | Start FiveM from the Start menu shortcut instead |
How to check that the uninstall really worked
After you delete the FiveM folder and shortcuts, press Windows + R and open %localappdata% again. The FiveM folder should be gone. Then open Task Manager and confirm there are no FiveM processes. Finally restart Windows if you removed many files, since a pending file lock can bring a folder back on the next launch. You do not need a special uninstaller, because FiveM does not install system services in the usual way, but the official documentation advises using its support article if the shortcut deletion did not remove the program.
Reinstalling without repeating the problem
- Download the installer only from the official FiveM site. Search results sometimes show copycat pages.
- Install into your user profile, as the installer does by default, rather than into a protected folder.
- Point FiveM to your GTA V folder if it asks. If the wrong folder is detected, the "Could not find game executable" error appears.
- Start with a small, stable server for the first join, to let the base cache download without a huge server's resources.
- Restore your key binds and favourites. If you saved your servers in a list, add them again.
When it is not FiveM at all
If every game crashes or stutters, the cause may be your drivers, a full disk or overheating. If only one server fails, the problem may be that server, and the FiveM documentation suggests testing on its official test server to compare. If many servers fail at the same time, check the service status page before you delete anything, since a service problem cannot be fixed on your PC.
Quick reference
| Situation | Best first step |
|---|---|
| Server loads slowly | Wait for the first download; free disk space |
| Weird UI glitches | Clear cache/browser and nui-storage |
| Error mentioning a DLL | Delete caches.xml, then reset the app data |
| FiveM will not start after an update | Close all processes, then reset the app data |
| Want to remove FiveM | Delete the FiveM folder in %localappdata% and the shortcuts |
Windows checks that fix FiveM problems without touching FiveM
A surprising share of FiveM trouble comes from the system around it, not from the game files. Before you spend an hour on reinstalling, run through these checks. They are quick and reversible.
Security software and exclusions
The FiveM documentation says that aggressive antivirus settings often cause the stuck screen "Starting FiveM, we're getting there", that some vendors block FiveM entirely and that you should contact support about it. On a normal Windows PC, open Windows Security, go to Virus and threat protection, then to the exclusion settings, and add the FiveM folder in your user profile as an exclusion. If you use a third-party security suite, look for a similar exclusion list. Only exclude the FiveM folder, not a whole drive, and keep protection on.
Firewall and network
FiveM needs to connect to servers over the internet. If a firewall prompt appeared the first time you started FiveM and you chose "block", servers will not load. Open the Windows firewall settings and allow FiveM on private and public networks. A VPN or a proxy can also break the handshake with a server or make it very slow, so disable it for a test. Restarting the router and flushing the DNS cache can clear stale network state, which you can do by opening the Command Prompt and typing ipconfig /flushdns.
Disk space and drive health
FiveM stores server files in its cache. A drive with only a few gigabytes free can produce strange failures during the first download of a server, long loading screens and crashes that look like game bugs. Keep at least 20 to 30 GB free on the drive that holds the FiveM folder and your GTA V installation. A slow or failing hard drive also makes loading very slow, so if possible keep both on an SSD.
Windows version and updates
The docs list a specific error for outdated Windows 10 builds, requiring at least version 1703. Run winver to see your version. Keep Windows and your graphics driver up to date, and restart the PC after large updates, because pending updates can leave files locked.
Run as administrator, but only to test
Starting FiveM as administrator sometimes helps when a permission problem blocks an update, and it is worth testing once. Do not use it permanently unless needed, because running a game with administrator rights increases risk if a malicious server or file were to exploit it.
Backing up what you care about
A cache is disposable. Your personal setup is not. Before a deep reset, copy these to a safe folder:
- Your key binds and any custom UI changes. The guide we used recommends noting them in advance.
- Your list of favourite servers or the invite links (cfx.re/join/...) you use.
- Any client-side configuration files you edited by hand, such as an autoexec-style file.
- Screenshots or recordings you keep in the FiveM folder.
The easiest backup is simply to copy the whole FiveM folder to another drive before you change anything. It can be large because of the GTA V cache, so for a quick backup copy only the smaller settings files and note the list of servers in a text file.
Symptom to cause: a quick diagnosis table
| What you see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| FiveM closes instantly after the logo | Damaged cache or blocked component | Clear safe cache folders, check security software |
| Black or colored screen without menu | GPU or browser engine issue | Update graphics driver; the docs mention older AMD laptop GPUs for one case |
| Loading bar does not move | Server down, firewall or VPN | Try another server, disable VPN, allow FiveM in the firewall |
| Crashes only on one server | Server resources | Join the official test server to compare, then contact the server owners |
| Crashes on every server | Local install or hardware | Reset app data, update drivers, verify GTA V files |
| Very low FPS only on a roleplay server | Heavy custom resources | Lower graphics settings; ask the server about recommended specs |
Performance after a clean start
A fresh install is also a chance to set things up well. Choose a sensible graphics preset, because high-detail settings in a crowded roleplay city can cost many frames. Lower shadows and grass first, since they are heavy and rarely matter for roleplay. Use fullscreen or borderless mode as you prefer, and set a frame limit if your GPU runs hot. Roleplay servers add custom vehicles, buildings and scripts, so performance differs by server, and a low-FPS complaint is often about the server, not about your PC. Read our guide on ReShade and graphics mods before adding visual tools, because they cost FPS and can break server rules.
A note on safety
When FiveM breaks, search results fill with "fixers", "cleaners" and downloads that promise to repair your install. Do not run unknown tools. The fixes in this guide use only Windows and the files FiveM itself creates. Download FiveM only from the official site, and download server files only through FiveM itself when you connect. If someone in a Discord offers a "special client" or asks you to run a file to join a server, treat it as a red flag and ask the server staff in the official channel.
Summary: your plan in one minute
- Close FiveM and any leftover processes.
- Clear the safe cache folders and keep cache/game.
- If an error names a DLL or a splash screen, apply the targeted fix from the docs.
- Check security software, firewall, VPN and disk space.
- If nothing works, remove the FiveM folder and shortcuts, then reinstall from the official site.
Step 4: reinstall cleanly
Download FiveM only from the official site, fivem.net, because fake installers exist. Run it, point it to your GTA V folder if asked, and join a server. If you are not sure how to connect, see how to connect to a FiveM server. If the problem returns on one server only, the cause is likely that server, not your install: the docs suggest joining the official FiveM test server to compare.
