ReShade adds post-processing such as sharpening and colour grading on top of the game. Installing it on FiveM is common, but it is not the same as a normal single-player mod, because every server sets its own rules. Checked October 31, 2026.
Key takeaways
- Guides say FiveM does not ban ReShade by default, but individual servers can ban it entirely.
- Effects that use the depth buffer, and presets that brighten the night or remove weather, are the usual reasons staff act.
- Even light presets cost FPS, so test on a busy city scene.
Read the server rules first
Many roleplay servers list graphics tools in their Discord rules. Some allow colour and sharpening only, some ban everything. If staff ask you to turn it off, do it immediately, because ignorance of a server rule is rarely accepted as an excuse. Ask in the server Discord if the rules are unclear.
What is usually fine, and what is not
Colour correction, mild sharpening and tonemapping are the effects most servers tolerate. The risky group is depth-based effects such as ambient occlusion, depth of field and fog changes, because forcing access to the depth buffer can trigger anti-cheat flags according to ReShade guides. Presets that make night look like day, remove rain or fog, or let you see through weather are seen as an unfair advantage. Renaming ReShade files to hide them is a red flag too.
Installing carefully
Download ReShade only from reshade.me and avoid mirrors and pre-made bundles. Close FiveM first, run the installer, choose DirectX 10/11/12 as the API (not Vulkan or OpenGL) and install only the default shader package at the start. Be aware that community guides disagree about whether the installer should point to the FiveM executable or to GTA5.exe, so follow the current instructions on the ReShade site and test at the FiveM main menu. If the ReShade text shows in the corner there, it loaded. Keep your first preset simple and save a clean fallback.
What it costs in FPS
ReShade adds work for the GPU. A basic low-end preset with sharpening, colour and tonemapping is described as costing roughly 2 to 4 FPS, while depth-based shaders scale much worse on weak graphics cards. If you already fall under 60 FPS in busy areas, use a very light preset. Test one change at a time in a crowded place such as a police station or a downtown crossing.
How ReShade works, in plain words
ReShade is a post-processing injector. It does not change the game's files or the world. It waits until the game has drawn a frame, then runs small programs called shaders on that image before it reaches your screen. Because it works on the picture, it can change colour, contrast, sharpness and mood, but it cannot add new models or textures. That is the difference from a graphics mod, which replaces game assets.
This also explains the rules. A shader that only changes colour affects how the picture looks. A shader that reads the depth of the scene can do more: it can detect distance and remove fog or highlight things, which is why depth-based effects are the ones servers worry about.
Effects, risk and cost
The ranking is a guide, not a promise. A server that bans ReShade completely will ban even a simple colour filter, while a relaxed server may allow almost everything but night boosters. The rule of thumb is to ask in the server's Discord before you join with a preset that changes brightness or visibility.
A safer way to build your first preset
- Start with no preset. Install ReShade with only the default shader package, as the guide we checked recommends.
- Enable one effect at a time, such as tonemapping or colour balance. Compare with the effect on and off.
- Keep contrast and brightness changes small. Big changes make dark areas too bright, which is what staff look for.
- Avoid depth-based effects until you know your server's rule.
- Save the preset under a clear name, and keep a clean fallback preset with nothing enabled.
- Test in a busy area and watch the frame rate.
Performance: measuring instead of guessing
ReShade adds work for the GPU in every frame. The guide we read describes a basic preset with colour, sharpening and tonemapping as costing about 2 to 4 FPS, and heavy depth-based effects as costing much more on weak cards. To measure, note your frame rate in the same busy place without ReShade, then with it, and then enable effects one by one. If the drop is bigger than you accept, lower the quality settings of the effect, such as the sample count of ambient occlusion, before you turn it off. If your frame rate was already below 60 in busy areas, keep to light presets or none.
Common ReShade problems
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| No ReShade text at the FiveM menu | The installation target or API was wrong; reinstall following the instructions on reshade.me |
| Crash on start | Remove ReShade files and try again; a conflict with an overlay is possible |
| Screen is too dark or too bright | Reset the preset and reduce contrast changes |
| Big FPS loss | Disable depth-based effects first |
| Server asks you to remove it | Do it immediately and rejoin |
| Home key does not open the overlay | Check the key in the ReShade settings; some keyboards use a function key |
How to remove ReShade cleanly
If you need to join a server that bans ReShade, or something breaks, remove it. Close FiveM, then open the folder where ReShade was installed and delete the files the installer added, typically a graphics DLL such as dxgi.dll, the ReShade configuration file and the shader folders. The exact names depend on the version and the installer's choices, so check the folder contents rather than guessing. After removal, start FiveM to the main menu and confirm that the ReShade text is gone. If a problem persists, use the steps in our cache and reset guide.
Graphics settings that cost less than ReShade
If your goal is a better-looking and smoother game, the in-game settings often give more for less. Lower shadow quality and grass first for performance. Texture quality depends on your video memory, so reduce it if you see stuttering. Anti-aliasing improves edges at a cost. Resolution scaling can recover frames. Many roleplayers also use a mild colour preset only for screenshots, and disable it for normal play. Tune the in-game settings first, then add visual tools if you still want them.
Rules checklist before you play with ReShade
- Read the server rules and the Discord announcements for the words "ReShade", "graphics", "visual" and "mods".
- Ask staff if a preset is allowed when in doubt, and keep their answer.
- Do not use weather removal, night boost or depth-based effects on servers that ban them.
- Do not rename or hide files.
- Be ready to disable and rejoin at once if asked.
Content creators and screenshots
Many people use ReShade for screenshots and videos only. That is a good compromise: keep a clean setup for play, and enable your preset when you record. This avoids rule conflicts and protects your frame rate when it matters. If you publish footage, mention the preset so viewers know the look is modified. On our site you can browse live roleplay streams, many of which use visual enhancements; the server list helps you pick the community whose rules match your style.
Other graphics mods
Texture and visual packs change files in your game. Only use ones that explicitly support FiveM and that your server allows, never download paid mods from cracked sites, and keep a backup so you can return to a clean install. Our guide on resetting FiveM helps if something breaks.
Types of graphics mods and what they change
"Graphics mod" covers several different things, and the risks differ. Knowing the type helps you judge whether a download is safe and allowed.
| Type | What it changes | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Post-processing (ReShade) | The finished image | Server rules on visibility; FPS |
| Texture packs | Surface detail of roads, buildings, vehicles | Video memory use, stutter, file size |
| Lighting and weather mods | Light, sky, fog, rain | Can change visibility; often restricted |
| Vehicle and clothing replacements | Models and textures | May conflict with server-streamed assets |
| Visual settings files | Configuration values | Wrong values can crash or break rules |
On a FiveM roleplay server, much of the world is streamed from the server, so a client-side replacement may simply be overridden. This is another reason to test before you spend time on a heavy pack.
Memory, storage and the hidden costs
High-resolution packs use more video memory, and a graphics card that runs out of it starts to stutter, even if the average frame rate looks fine. If you have 6 GB of video memory or less, be careful with big packs. They also take disk space, and a drive that is nearly full slows both the game and the cache. Plan a backup so that you can return to a clean install. Copying the game files before you change them is the simplest safety net, and it saves a long download if something goes wrong.
Where to download, and where not to
- Official sites of the tool. ReShade comes from reshade.me, and only from there.
- Well-known modding communities where files have comments, version history and a visible author.
- Never from random links in chat, video descriptions or "free premium mod" sites. Fake mods are a common way to spread malware that steals accounts.
- Never run installers that ask you to disable security software or to log in with your Rockstar, Steam or Discord credentials.
Test in a safe order
- Install and test the main menu of FiveM, without joining a server.
- Join a small, relaxed server and look around.
- Check the frame rate in a crowded area.
- Read the rules of the server you actually want to play on.
- Only then join the busy roleplay server.
What staff actually see
Server staff cannot see your settings directly in most cases. They notice behavior: a player who sees in the dark, who reacts to things hidden by fog, or who is reported by others. Some servers use anti-cheat tools that flag certain modifications, and the guide we checked says that forcing depth buffer access can trigger such flags. The practical lesson is that ReShade is rarely the reason for a ban by itself, but a preset that gives an advantage can be. Staying inside the rules protects both your account and the community you play in.
Our verdict
If you want a nicer picture, use a light preset with colour and sharpening, test it, and keep it modest. If you play on a strict roleplay server, ask first. If your frame rate is already a problem, skip visual tools and spend the effort on in-game settings. The best graphics setup is the one that lets you keep playing without trouble from the server or your PC.
