Dota 2 beginner guide: roles, lanes and your first games

Dota 2 looks scary, but the core idea is simple: work with four teammates and destroy the enemy Ancient.

D2

Dota 2 is a free team game by Valve. Two teams of five players each pick a hero and fight across one map. The first team to destroy the other team's Ancient wins. Steam says there are over a hundred heroes, and all of them are free for every player. This guide covers the basics for 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Win by destroying the enemy Ancient, not by getting the most kills.
  • Learn a few heroes well instead of many heroes badly.
  • Practice with bots and hero demo mode first.
  • Mute rude players and keep playing. It is allowed and it helps.

Your first steps

  1. Install Dota 2 from Steam (see our PC requirements guide).
  2. Play the tutorial and a co-op match against bots.
  3. Open hero demo mode to try abilities and items with no pressure.
  4. Pick one simple hero and play it for ten games.
  5. Only then try matchmaking with real players.

The five roles

Teams usually split into five positions. Position 1 is the carry, who grows strong late. Position 2 plays the middle lane. Position 3 is the offlaner. Positions 4 and 5 are supports who help the team and buy useful items.

PositionJob
1 CarryFarm gold, deal damage late
2 MidTake levels fast, move around the map
3 OfflaneStart fights, absorb damage
4 Soft supportRoam, set up kills
5 Hard supportProtect the carry, heal, ward

Lanes, last hitting and gold

Three lanes lead to the enemy base. Small units called creeps walk down each lane. Landing the final hit on a creep gives you gold. That is called last hitting. Gold buys items, and items make your hero stronger. Focus on last hits for the first ten minutes before you worry about anything else.

Game modes to know

All Pick lets everyone choose any hero. Captain's Mode is mostly used by pros. Turbo is a faster mode with more gold and experience, which many new players like because games end sooner.

Good habits

  • Look at the minimap every few seconds.
  • Stay near your team when towers fall.
  • Do not chase one kill into the enemy base.
  • Watch streamers and pros to see how roles work in real games.

No. Steam states that all heroes are available to every player.

How long is a Dota 2 match?

Matches often last 30 to 60 minutes. Turbo mode is shorter.
